Could a Nazi soldier or terrorist be courageous? The Courage Problem asks us to answer this sort of question, and then to explain why people are reluctant to give this answer. The present paper sheds new light on the Courage Problem by examining a controversy sparked by Bill Maher, who claimed that the 9/11 terrorists’ acts were ‘not cowardly.’ It is shown that Maher's controversy is fundamentally related to the Courage Problem. Bernard Williams proposed his relativism of distance based on the recognition “that others are at varying distances from us”. Recent work in moral psychology and experimental philosophy highlights the prevalence of folk relativism in relation to spatial and temporal distance. However, Williams’ relativism of distance as well as recent empirical findings which seem to support some of Williams’ main ideas on this issue have received scant attention. In this article, we would like to focus on the phenomenon of moral relativism (...) regarding spatiotemporal distance as an entry point to the nature of folk moral relativism and the methodology of meta-ethics. To do so, we first introduce Williams’ relativism of distance. Then we compare Williams’ approach on this matter to recent experimental approaches on folk relativism. On this score the main result is that Williams’ proposal is consistent with several well-established insights on the experimental study of folk relativism. Williams’ relativism of distance is not only empirically plausible, but it is also of relevance for shaping the methodology of an empirically informed meta-ethics. In Truth and Truthfulness, Bernard Williams sought to defend the value of truth by giving a vindicatory genealogy revealing its instrumental value. But what separates Williams’s instrumental vindication from the indirect utilitarianism of which he was a critic? And how can genealogy vindicate anything, let alone something which, as Williams says of the concept of truth, does not have a history? In this paper, I propose to resolve these puzzles by reading Williams as a type of pragmatist and his genealogy (...) as a pragmatic genealogy. On this basis, I show just in what sense Williams’s genealogy can by itself yield reasons to cultivate a sense of the value of truth. Using various criticisms of Williams’s genealogical method as a foil, I then develop an understanding of pragmatic genealogy which reveals it to be uniquely suited to dealing with practices exhibiting what I call self-effacing functionality—practices that are functional only insofar as and because we do not engage in them for their functionality. I conclude with an assessment of the wider significance of Williams’s genealogy for his own oeuvre and for further genealogical inquiry. (shrink)

Bernard Williams, yirminci yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Anglosakson ahlak felsefesinin önde gelen isimlerinden biri olmuştur. Görüşleriyle günümüzdeki tartışmalarda da hâlâ etkili bir figür olan Williams’ın etik düşüncesi, bilhassa modern ahlak felsefesine karşı güçlü bir skeptisizm içerir. Modern ahlak felsefesindeki pek çok pozisyon ve kabulü etik hayatın yanlış bir temsili olarak değerlendiren Williams, bu gibi pozisyon ve kabullerin etik pratiğimizi anlamak ve ona yön vermek açısından bize yardımcı olamayacağını, hatta bu tür bir anlama ve yön verme çabasını engellediğini ileri sürer. Modern ahlak (...) felsefesindeki karakteristik bir pozisyon, faydacılık, Williams’ın bu tür görüş ve eleştirilerinin başlıca hedeflerinden biridir. Bizim bu makaledeki amacımız, Williams’ın faydacı ahlak anlayışına getirdiği eleştirinin ayrıntılı bir takdimini yapmak ve bu eleştirinin Williams’ın etik düşüncesi içindeki yerine işaret etmektir. Williams tarafından karakter bütünlüğüne yapılan vurgunun altını çizen makalemiz, Williams’ın faydacı ahlak anlayışına getirdiği eleştiriyi, soyut bir evrensele dayanan tüm ahlak anlayışlarına yönelttiği daha genel bireleştirinin bağlamına yerleştirmeyi denemektedir.
