  • Epistemic empathy in childrearing and education.Kai Horsthemke - 2015 - Ethics and Education 10 (1):61-72.
The question, what is it like to be a child?, is one that most of us, in our capacity as parents and/or educators, have probably asked ourselves already at some point. Perhaps one might go further and suggest that it is a question we ought to ask ourselves, insofar as the attempt to provide a meaningful response has a significant bearing on childrearing and education. It is a question that presumably frames the processes of cognitive and moral education – i.e. (...)

  • Understanding empathy: why phenomenology and hermeneutics can help medical education and practice.Claire Hooker - 2015 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 18 (4):541-552.
This article offers a critique and reformulation of the concept of empathy as it is currently used in the context of medicine and medical care. My argument is three pronged. First, that the instrumentalised notion of empathy that has been common within medicine erases the term’s rich epistemological history as a special form of understanding, even a vehicle of social inquiry, and has instead substituted an account unsustainably structured according to the polarisations of modernity. I suggest that understanding empathy by (...)

  • Phenomenological contributions to a theory of social cognition.Shaun Gallagher - 2005 - Husserl Studies 21 (2):95-110.
Hidden away in the remote corners of one of the largest parts of Husserl's Kˆrper, if we can use that word to translate Corpus, there is ein Leib , an animate body of text that reverberates not only with some of Husserl's other little known texts, but also with some of the most recent discoveries in neuroscience. These texts suggest a theory of intersubjectivity, or what psychologists term social cognition. Let me start with a proviso: whether Husserl ever fully settled (...)

The tendency to isolate aesthetics in the study of fine arts and in basic fine arts research as well as through the aesthetics of empathy goes back to post-Kantian philosophy. This way of thinking, as far as it was of particular interest to Cohen, dominated aesthetics and art theory during the time of the publication his Ästhetik des reinen Gefühls. In the Marburg School itself, the systematic basis of aesthetics began to shift in 1912.

  • Nikolai Lossky’s Reception and Criticism of Husserl.Frédéric Tremblay - 2016 - Husserl Studies 32 (2):149-163.
Nikolai Lossky is key to the history of the Husserl-Rezeption in Russia. He was the first to publish a review of the Russian translation of Husserl’s first volume of the Logische Untersuchungen that appeared in 1909. He also published a presentation and criticism of Husserl’s transcendental idealism in 1939. An English translation of both of Lossky’s publications is offered in this volume for the first time. The present paper, which is intended as an introduction to these documents, situates Lossky within (...)
