A total of 1390 university students from five public Moldovan universities completed a survey reporting their experiences and beliefs with respect to 22 types of academic misconduct. An interpretable five-factor solution to the frequencies of these behaviors accounted for more than half of the total variance. The two most reliable predictors were 1) how often students witnessed other students engage in these behaviors, and 2) perceived acceptability of the behaviors. Demographic predictors of these behaviors (gender, academic specialty, year in school, (...) institution, grade average, and scholarship status) predicted minimal variance. Most research on corruption in educational settings has focused on a cross-national and macro-level analysis; however, to our knowledge, few papers have sought to explore individual perceptions that explain corruption in higher education. The present research aimed to disentangle students’ predictors of corrupt intention in a Spanish public university. A total of 933 undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. students filled out an online survey measuring four corruption scenarios: favoritism, bribery, fraud, and embezzlement. Path analysis revealed that justifiability, risk perception, and perceived (...) prevalence of corruption were significant factors in predicting corrupt intention. Moreover, willingness to report a corrupt act was predicted by corrupt intention, justifiability, and risk perception. Corrupt behavior is a complex phenomenon explained not only by peers’ behavior, but also by their individual justifications and perception of risk. Education is not free of corruption, and universities must address this urgent problem in order to avoid future economic, societal, and ethical problems. (shrink)

The superfluous and systemic problem of fraud and corruption in South African universities has intentionally paralysed internal control measures that detect and combat corruption. This reality has been aggravated by the deployment of unskilled workers in strategic positions in universities, driving the corruption agenda and frustrating those skilled quality employees capable of operating the systems that detect and combat corruption. This article explores employees’ experience and knowledge in previously disadvantaged universities relating to operating systems that enable the detection and prevention (...) of fraud and corruption. This paper further attempts to assess whether these universities employ and retain knowledgeable and quality employees who can operate these systems. The qualitative multi-case study was conducted using a sample of 20 middle and senior managers, with data collected through interviews. The study generated five themes from the research findings, which appear to have allowed the corrupt practices to occur. These include, first, intentionally paralysed internal control systems and processes; second, the deliberate employment and retention of incompetent employees; third, the inconsistent application of policies and practices which favour those driving the corruption agenda; fourth, the lack of the requisite knowledge and skills; and lastly, the absence of retention and succession plans, with those who are ethical being isolated and purged from the corrupt system. This study has not been explored previously and therefore adds value to theories and realities of corruption in universities. The research also contributes by shedding light on the extent of organised and systemic corruption in South African universities, assisting decision-makers in implementing the appropriate interventions to combat corruption. Research has found that academic dishonesty is common among college and university undergraduate students worldwide. Two variables found to have a significant effect on student cheating were students’ attitudes toward AD and perceptions of peer engagement in AD. This quantitative research study examined preservice teachers’ attitudes and behaviors related to academic dishonesty. Utilizing three parts of the Academic Integrity Survey, this study analyzed data from 62 preservice teachers enrolled at a university in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States that (...) were preparing to teach students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades in both public and private schools. Data analyses examined the frequency rates at which preservice teachers self-reported engaging in academic dishonesty, as well as the relationships that existed between preservice teachers’ attitudes toward academic dishonesty, perceptions of peer engagement in AD, and self-reported engagement in AD. Results showed that rates for self-reported engagement in academic dishonesty among preservice teachers were similar to those found for undergraduates in other majors, with attitude toward behavior found to be significantly associated with and predictive of self-reported engagement in academic cheating among this group of preservice teachers.
