    The purpose of this article is to examine whether patient/client autonomy is always compatible with the nurse’s role of advocacy.     Sufficient doubt surrounds electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to warrant nurses opting out of its administration and/or advising patients that it may be only one of a range of treatments open to them. In the latter respect, this discussion touches on aspects of the concept of advocacy. Relationships with the medical profession are also considered, as is the indefatigable attention given to issues of 'professional status' by nurses; this preoccupation facilitates an avoidance of therapeutic/advocacy issues.
