  1. Demonstration of Understanding Through the Deployment of Japanese Enactment.Yuki Arita - 2021 - Human Studies 44 (2):305-331.
The present study examines the interactional phenomenon of enactment, wherein conversation participants act out themselves or others by utilizing both linguistic and non-linguistic resources and demonstrate certain ideas rather than describe them. While past research has revealed that people, based on their first- or second-hand experiences, frequently use enactment during storytelling activities to depict what story characters said and/or did, this article explores cases in which participants in Japanese conversations enact based on what co-participants have experienced. In such cases, producers (...)

  • Constructing and negotiating the professional identity of ‘leader’ by suggesting and challenging improvement of professional practices: Deontics in a four-part sequential structure.Mie Femø Nielsen, Brian L. Due & Louise Tranekjær - 2022 - Discourse Studies 24 (5):640-661.
The paper contributes to previous studies of identity as locally and interactionally produced by pointing to some of the multimodal resources employed by participants to achieving, challenge and manage the professional identity of ‘leader’ in different workplace settings. We examine professional identity work in sequential environments where it provides a resource for handling the resistance to improvement displayed by another participant. We show how leader identity work gets embedded within a four-part structure of: identifying a problem, proposing improvements, misaligning with (...)

  • ‘Get me the airway there’: Negotiating leadership in obstetric emergencies.Dimitrios Siassakos, Katherine Bristowe, Stephen O’Brien, Jo Angouri & Polina Mesinioti - 2020 - Discourse and Communication 14 (2):150-174.
The article discusses leadership enactment in medical emergencies. We draw on video recordings of simulated obstetric emergencies and investigate how senior clinicians ‘do being’ the leader discursively in the spatiomaterial context of the emergency room. We take an interactional analysis approach, combining conversation analysis and interactional sociolinguistics and look specifically into the ways in which professional roles do interactional control using directives and questions in the material space of the obstetric room. We discuss this interactional performance in relation to the (...)

  • Negative Requests Within Hair Salons: Grammar and Embodiment in Action Formation.Anne-Sylvie Horlacher - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:689563.
Although requests constitute a type of action that have been widely discussed within conversation analysis-oriented work, they have only recently begun to be explored in relation to the situated and multimodal dimensions in which they occur. The contribution of this paper resides in the integration of bodily-visual conduct (gaze and facial expression, gesture and locomotion, object manipulation) into a more grammatical account of requesting. Drawing on video recordings collected in two different hair salons located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland (...)

  • How to Get a Grip on Processes of Communalization and Distinction in Group Interactions—An Analytical Framework.Kristin Weiser-Zurmühlen - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13:786685.
This article proposes an analytical framework that combines Conversation Analysis, Positioning Theory, and Stance Analysis to study communalization and distinction as basic interactive mechanisms within group interactions. The framework is based on the premise that participants in multi-party interactions constantly manage the local demands of the ongoing conversation and turn-by-turn talk as well as implicitly or explicitly evoked references to global discourses, which in turn are closely related to the topic currently discussed. By considering both micro- and macro-contextual features in (...)

  • Only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches? Deontics and epistemics in discussions of health and well-being in participatory workplace settings.Johan Simonsen Abildgaard & Christian Dyrlund Wåhlin-Jacobsen - 2020 - Discourse and Communication 14 (1):44-64.
In participatory activities in the workplace, employees are invited to raise problems and suggest improvements to the management. Although it is widely acknowledged that employees rarely control decisions in these settings, little is known about the interactional resources that employees and managers draw upon when negotiating consensus about which initiatives to pursue in the future. We analyse interactions from participatory meetings in an industrial setting in relation to the topic of work shoes, showing how the participants orient to both their (...)

  • Ignorance-unmasking questions in the Royal–Sarkozy presidential debate: A resource to claim epistemic authority.Andrzej Zuczkowski, Ilaria Riccioni, Ramona Bongelli & Laura Vincze - 2016 - Discourse Studies 18 (4):430-453.
The article presents an analysis of the ways in which knowledge is displayed, contested and renegotiated in the 2007 French presidential debate between Ségolène Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy. Knowledge displays can be achieved through a series of ‘neutral’ resources, such as informing, explanation or comment, or through face-damaging resources, such as questioning an unknowledgeable interlocutor to prove his inferior epistemic status and boost one’s own. The article focuses on this latter type of knowledge display where a knowledgeable participant engages in (...)

  • The ubiquity of epistemics: A rebuttal to the ‘epistemics of epistemics’ group.John Heritage - 2017 - Discourse Studies 20 (1):14-56.
In 2016, Discourse Studies published a special issue on the ‘epistemics of epistemics’ comprising six papers, all of which took issue with a strand of my research on how knowledge claims are asserted, implemented and contested through facets of turn design and sequence organization. Apparently coordinated through some years of discussion, the critique is nonetheless somewhat confused and confusing. In this article, I take up some of more prominent elements of the critique: my work is ‘cognitivist’ substituting causal psychological analysis (...)

  • Epistemic responsibility predicts developing frame awareness in early childhood: A language socialization perspective.Sarah Rose Bellavance - 2022 - Discourse Studies 24 (6):675-691.
This article examines the emergent relationship between epistemic responsibility and frame awareness in early childhood, wherein a mother uses language socialization practices to guide her child into a new frame. The pair co-constructs the parameters of the new frame through negotiation of epistemic responsibility and remedial interchanges. The analysis demonstrates that these remedial interchanges arise from conflicting understandings of the embeddedness of frames and the epistemic dynamics that these frames entail. The child maintains epistemic primacy in her concurrent play frame, (...)
