  • Examining the Ethics and Impacts of Laws Restricting Transgender Youth‐Athlete Participation.Valerie Moyer, Amanda Zink & Brendan Parent - 2023 - Hastings Center Report 53 (3):6-14.
As of this writing, twenty‐one states have passed laws barring transgender youth‐athletes from competing on public‐school sports teams in accordance with their gender identity. Proponents of these regulations claim that transgender females in particular have inherent physiological advantages that threaten a “level playing field” for their cisgender competitors. Existing evidence is limited but does not support these restrictions. Gathering more robust data will require allowing transgender youth to compete (rather than preemptively barring them), but even if trans females are shown (...)

  • Genetic Enhancement in Sports: The Role of Reason and Private Rationalities in the Public Arena.Silvia Camporesi & Paolo Maugeri - 2011 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 20 (2):248-257.
Reviews of philosophical books run the risk of being either excessively and unconstructively critical or superficially praiseworthy. We assess whether genetic enhancement in sports should be conceived as an eighth wonder or an eighth (...)

  • In Sport and Social Justice, Is Genetic Enhancement a Game Changer?Lisa S. Parker - 2012 - Health Care Analysis 20 (4):328-346.
The possibility of genetic enhancement to increase the likelihood of success in sport and life’s prospects raises questions for accounts of sport and theories of justice. These questions obviously include the fairness of such enhancement and its relationship to the goals of sport and demands of justice. Of equal interest, however, is the effect on our understanding of individual effort, merit, and desert of either discovering genetic contributions to components of such effort or recognizing the influence of social factors on (...)
