  1. Teaching ethics using small-group, problem-based learning.J. W. Tysinger, L. K. Klonis, J. Z. Sadler & J. M. Wagner - 1997 - Journal of Medical Ethics 23 (5):315-318.
Ethics is the emphasis of our first-year Introduction to Clinical Medicine-1 course. Introduction to Clinical Medicine-1 uses problem-based learning to involve groups of seven to nine students and two facilitators in realistic clinical cases. The cases emphasize ethics, but also include human behaviour, basic science, clinical medicine, and prevention learning issues. Three cases use written vignettes, while the other three cases feature standardized patients. Groups meet twice for each case. In session one, students read the case introduction, obtain data from (...)

  • A Problem-Based Learning Approach to Business Ethics Education.Yusuf M. Sidani & Jon Thornberry - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics Education 9:215-231.
There are several challenges associated with traditional business ethics education. While case studies have been used extensively in ethics education, such use can be complemented by using Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL represents a pedagogy employing more collaborative tools that involve students more extensively in the learning process. A well-designed teaching approach based on PBL can have significant positive impact on students’ learning. This paper supplies a representative teaching interaction based on PBL, and discusses the implications of its structure. Introducing (...)

  • Do case studies mislead about the nature of reality?S. Pattison, D. Dickenson, M. Parker & T. Heller - 1999 - Journal of Medical Ethics 25 (1):42-46.
This paper attempts a partial, critical look at the construction and use of case studies in ethics education. It argues that the authors and users of case studies are often insufficiently aware of the literary nature of these artefacts: this may lead to some confusion between fiction and reality. Issues of the nature of the genre, the fictional, story-constructing aspect of case studies, the nature of authorship, and the purposes and uses of case studies as "texts" are outlined and discussed. (...)

  • The other objective of ethics education: Re-humanising the accounting profession – a study of ethics education in law, engineering, medicine and accountancy. [REVIEW]Ken McPhail - 2001 - Journal of Business Ethics 34 (3-4):279 - 298.
Recently within the critical accounting literature Funnell (1998) has argued that accounting was implicated in the Holocaust. This charge is primarily related to the technical, mathematical nature of accounting and its ability to dehumanise individuals. Broadbent (1998, see also DeMoss and McCann, 1997) has also contended that "accounting logic" excludes emotion. She suggests that a more emancipatory form of accounting could be possible if emotion were given a voice and allowed to be heard within accounting discourse (see also Kjonstad and (...)

  • Research-based learning through self-organized inquiry in empirical medical ethics.Joschka Haltaufderheide & Katja Kühlmeyer - 2022 - Ethik in der Medizin 34 (3):339-360.
Definition of the problem The acquisition of technical and research skills can be promoted in particular in courses that confront students with complex problems. In this article, we present didactic reflections on learning through self-organized inquiry in empirical medical ethics. Arguments Based on the theory of pragmatism, we show how a specific form of research-based learning courses can be realized to promote medical ethical skills. We focus on projects in which students can experience the process of conducting empirical–ethical research. Conclusion (...)
