This publication articulated in three parts, and twelve chapters endeavours to engage with the complex negative emotions and consequent phenomenon of self-deceit, radicalisation and extremism. The Psychodynamic Surrounding of our Intentional Self; second part: Case Studies of Some Concrete Societal Encapsulations of the Negative Passions; and third part: Resisting the Colonisation of Tyrannical Affections. School is an educational institution designed to socialize future citizens that are Students, to adapt them to the Society to which they belong. But we cannot adapt without forcing. This means that all education, including School, needs authority that compels. As all authority is similar to constraint, the question we need to ask ourselves is how to educate in school in a democratic society? In other words, how can school combine constraint with the school’s goal of making learners free? The (...)

The fate of the ungraced innocents highlights much of what has been most difficult about the doctrine of original sin. As an alternative to the extremes of an easy-going universalism or consignment to the fires of hell, this paper re-examines Aquinas’s claims about a possible state of ungraced natural flourishing, arguing that this state is richer and more interesting than the name “limbo” implies. The paper also applies recent work in philosophy and psychology, especially on the second-person perspective, to understand (...)

  • On the Outskirts of the Canon: The Myth of the Lone Female Philosopher, and What to Do about It.Sandrine Berges - 2015 - Metaphilosophy 46 (3):380-397.
Women philosophers of the past, because they tended not to engage with each other much, are often perceived as isolated from ongoing philosophical dialogues. This has led—directly and indirectly—to their exclusion from courses in the history of philosophy. This article explores three ways in which we could solve this problem. The first is to create a course in early modern philosophy that focuses solely or mostly on female philosophers, using conceptual and thematic ties such as a concern for education and (...)

Realism has been a central object of attention among analytical philosophers for some decades. Starting from analytical philosophy, the return of realism has spread into other contemporary philosophical traditions and given birth to new trends in current discussions, as for example in the debates about “new realism.” Discussions about realism focused on linguistic meaning, epistemology, metaphysics, theory of action and ethics. The implications for politics of discussion about realism in action theory and in ethics, however, are not much discussed.

  • The Immorality of the Theatre: Echoes of the Criticism of Early Christian Literature in Rousseau’s Letter to D’Alembert.Catalina Cubillos - 2011 - Pensamiento y Cultura 14 (1):63-77.
