This paper addresses the unresolved question of whether demonstrative this/that and their accompanying gestures serve the same function. By utilizing Langacker’s notion of Current Discourse Space (CDS) and integrating gesture studies and frame semantics, this research models the entire process of demonstrative use and points to the distinct roles that demonstratives and gestures play in each usage event. The findings reveal that their functions are indeed different: the gesture (gazing) initially singles out an entity as a target, followed by the (...) demonstratives encoding it phonetically. Subsequently, the demonstratives evoke the initiation of a targeting act by the hearer, and the gesture (pointing) specifically identifies the entity during the decoding process. Based on the notion of distinguishing role and value, this study proposes that the semantic content (‘target’) encoded by demonstratives is the role (‘element’) within the viewing (attention)-target event frame, rather than its value (‘entity’). This principle applies to both exophoric and anaphoric contexts, providing a unified conceptual foundation for the function of demonstratives. In the light of these findings, the article also offers novel perspectives on the function of demonstratives as grounding elements, contributing to a deeper understanding of their role in communication. Cette étude qualitative propose une modélisation multimodale des constructions subordonnées en conversation spontanée, à partir de leur action sur les cadres interprétatifs. Les subordonnées ont longtemps été décrites en linguistique comme des éléments dépendants qui complètent des éléments primaires. Cependant, la Grammaire Cognitive a remis en question ce point de vue en montrant que l'emboîtement syntaxique ne reflète souvent que le point de départ choisi par les locuteurs pour véhiculer leur message. Les subordonnées sont des pratiques interactionnelles qui offrent une (...) reconstruction interprétative du discours. Les différents types syntaxiques de subordonnées font référence à différents cadres interprétatifs dans l'expérience du locuteur. La sélection de ces différents cadres est exprimée par le nombre différent d'indices de frontière prosodiques et gestuels produits en co-occurrence avec chaque type syntaxique de subordonnée. The framework of depicting put forward byClark (2016)offers a schematic vantage point from which to examine iconic language use. Confronting the framework with empirical data, we consider some of its key theoretical notions. Crucially, by reconceptualizing the typology of depictions, we identify an overlooked domain in the literature: “speech-embedded nonverbal depictions,” namely cases where meaning is communicated iconically, nonverbally, and without simultaneously co-occurring speech. In addition to contextualizing the phenomenon in relation to existing research, we demonstrate, with examples from American (...) TV talk shows, how such depictions function in real-life language use, offering a brief sketch of their complexities and arguing also for their theoretical significance. (shrink)
