  1. (1 other version)Towards a Practical Climate Ethics: Combining Two Approaches to Guide Ethical Decision-Making in Concrete Climate Governance Contexts.Anthony Voisard & Ivo Wallimann-Helmer - 2024 - Ethics, Policy and Environment 27 (3):333-349.
This paper discusses two approaches to climate ethics for practical reflection and decision-making in concrete local climate change governance. After a brief review of the main conceptual frameworks in climate ethics research, we show that none of these leading approaches is sufficiently context specific and pluralistic to provide guidance appropriate for concrete local climate governance. As alternatives, we present principlism as a methodology of mid-level principles and environmental pragmatism as an ethical approach. We argue that the two methodologies of principlism (...)

  • Take five? A coherentist argument why medical AI does not require a new ethical principle.Seppe Segers & Michiel De Proost - 2024 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 45 (5):387-400.
With the growing application of machine learning models in medicine, principlist bioethics has been put forward as needing revision. This paper reflects on the dominant trope in AI ethics to include a new ‘principle of explicability’ alongside the traditional four principles of bioethics that make up the theory of principlism. It specifically suggests that these four principles are sufficient and challenges the relevance of explicability as a separate ethical principle by emphasizing the coherentist affinity of principlism. We argue that, through (...)

  • Pragmatism and Experimental Bioethics.Henrik Rydenfelt - 2024 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 33 (2):174-184.
Pragmatism gained considerable attention in bioethical discussions in the early 21st century. However, some dimensions and contributions of pragmatism to bioethics remain underexplored in both research and practice. It is argued that pragmatism can make a distinctive contribution to bioethics through its concept, developed by Charles S. Peirce and John Dewey, that ethical issues can be resolved through experimental inquiry. Dewey’s proposal that policies can be confirmed or disconfirmed through experimentation is developed by comparing it to the confirmation of scientific (...)

  • Which naturalism for bioethics? A defense of moderate (pragmatic) naturalism.Eric Racine - 2008 - Bioethics 22 (2):92–100.
ABSTRACT There is a growing interest in various forms of naturalism in bioethics, but there is a clear need for further clarification. In an effort to address this situation, I present three epistemological stances: anti‐naturalism, strong naturalism, and moderate pragmatic naturalism. I argue that the dominant paradigm within philosophical ethics has been a form of anti‐naturalism mainly supported by a strong ‘is’ and ‘ought’ distinction. This fundamental epistemological commitment has contributed to the estrangement of academic philosophical ethics from major social (...)

  • Enriching our views on clinical ethics: Results of a qualitative study of the moral psychology of healthcare ethics committee members. [REVIEW]Eric Racine - 2008 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 5 (1):57-67.
The contribution of healthcare ethics committee (HEC) members to HECs is fundamental. However, little is known about how HEC members view clinical ethics. We report results from a qualitative study of the moral psychology of HEC members. We found that contrary to the existing Kohlberg-based studies, HEC members hold a pragmatic non-expert view of clinical ethics based mainly on respect for persons and a commitment to the patient’s good. In general, HEC members hold deflationary views regarding moral theory. Ethical principles (...)

  • Below the Surface of Clinical Ethics.J. Clint Parker - 2023 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 48 (1):1-11.
Often lurking below the surface of many clinical ethical issues are questions regarding background metaphysical, epistemological, meta-ethical, and political beliefs. In this issue, authors critically examine the effects of background beliefs on conscientious objection, explore ethical issues through the lenses of particular theoretical approaches like pragmatism and intersectional theory, rigorously explore the basic concepts at play within the patient safety movement, offer new theoretical approaches to old problems involving decision making for patients with dementia, explicate and explore the problems and (...)

  • Evaluating the 'Ethical Matrix' as a Radioactive Waste Management Deliberative Decision-Support Tool.Matthew Cotton - 2009 - Environmental Values 18 (2):153-176.
UK radioactive waste management policy making is currently taking place within a participatory and analytic- deliberative decision-making framework; one that seeks to integrate public and stakeholder values and perspectives with scientific and technical expertise. One important aspect of this socio-technical reframing of the radioactive waste problem is an explicit recognition that legitimate and defensible policy making must take into account important ethical issues if it is to be a success. Thus, there is a need for tools to incorporate adequate assessment (...)

  • A pragmatist approach to clinical ethics support: overcoming the perils of ethical pluralism.Giulia Inguaggiato, Suzanne Metselaar, Rouven Porz & Guy Widdershoven - 2019 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 22 (3):427-438.
In today’s pluralistic society, clinical ethics consultation cannot count on a pre-given set of rules and principles to be applied to a specific situation, because such an approach would deny the existence of different and divergent backgrounds by imposing a dogmatic and transcultural morality. Clinical ethics support (CES) needs to overcome this lack of foundations and conjugate the respect for the difference at stake with the necessity to find shared and workable solutions for ethical issues encountered in clinical practice. We (...)

  • Toward a new clinical pragmatism: method in clinical ethics consultation.Ryan Marshall Felder - 2024 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 27 (3):445-454.
In this paper, I leverage the pragmatist tradition in philosophy, the collective wisdom of scholarship in clinical ethics consultation, and earlier attempts to apply pragmatism in clinical ethics to develop a new vision of clinical ethics practice called New Clinical Pragmatism. It argues that clinical ethics methodology, from the New Clinical Pragmatist’s perspective, amounts to the recommendation that consultants should customize a methodological approach, drawing on the various available methods, depending on the demands of the specific case, and should avoid (...)
