    This paper develops an account of accuracy and truth in pictorial assertion. It argues that there are two ways in which pictorial assertions can be indirect: with respect to their content and with respect to their target. This twofold indirectness explains how accurate, unedited pictures can be used to make false pictorial assertions. It captures the fishiness of true pictorial assertions involving target-indirectness, such as true pictorial assertions involving outdated pictures.     Eckardt argues against the ontological reduction of events to “little movies in time and space.” In this paper I explore what this means for the representation of events in visual discourse, specifically film. As it turns out, we can build a rather intuitive film semantics on top of the ‘regional event’ ontology that Eckardt rejects. But we can also follow Eckardt’s reasoning and incorporate her participant-based event ontology.

    Visual narratives, like comics, at times show depictions of characters’ imagination, dreams, or flashbacks, which seem incongruent with the ongoing primary narrative. Such “domain constructions” thus integrate an auxiliary domain (e.g. a dream) within the primary domain (the expected, physical storyworld), and may require readers to resolve seemingly non-co-referential figures as co-referential (e.g. when a character’s dream shows that character as an animal).
