From its very beginning, sociological thought has been concerned with a topic central to our daily lives: social distance. Since inception, the concept of social distance has referred to the relationships of familiarity and strangeness between social groups, which is experienced in the social world in terms of “We” and “They”. This article covers the main tenets of a Schutzian phenomenological approach to the study of social distance and group relationships. Specific focus is placed on the different attitudes and valuations (...) of the in-group towards the out-group considered as a stranger, the invisible excess of meaning that emerges in these types of social relationships and the conceptual construction of the Other that explains the phenomenon of discrimination. We argue that the projective geometrical component of the Projective Consciousness Model can account for key aspects of pre-reflective self-consciousness and can relate PRSC intelligibly to another signal feature of subjectivity: perspectival character or point of view. We illustrate how the projective geometrical versions of the concepts of duality, reciprocity, polarity, closedness, closure, and unboundedness answer to salient aspects of the phenomenology of PRSC. We thus show that the same mathematics that accounts for the statics and dynamics of perspectival character (...) also accounts for PRSC. More generally, we argue that introducing higher-level geometrical concepts into the theory of PRSC, and into the theory of consciousness broadly, as the PCM does, promises to break longstanding theoretical impasses and dialectical stalemates. En este artículo se analizan los elogios y las críticas de Sartre en el ensayo _El ser y la nada _contra el concepto de reconocimiento de Hegel. Primero, se exhibe la importancia de esta noción para la superación del solipsismo; luego, se explican las denuncias de un optimismo ontológico y uno epistemológico en la visión hegeliana de la intersubjetividad. Como conclusión, se explicitan las diferencias entre el abordaje dialéctico-idealista de la _Anerkennung _ y el abordaje vivencial-existencial de la _reconnaissance _ (...) en estas reflexiones filosóficas acerca de las relaciones interpersonales.
