  1. Multiple Levels of Analysis and the Limitations of Methodological Individualisms.Ronald Jepperson & John W. Meyer - 2011 - Sociological Theory 29 (1):54 - 73.
This article discusses relations among the multiple levels of analysis present in macro-sociological explanation—i.e., relations of individual, structural, and institutional processes. It also criticizes the doctrinal insistence upon single-level individualistic explanation found in some prominent contemporary sociological theory. For illustrative material the article returns to intellectual uses of Weber's "Protestant Ethic thesis," showing how an artificial version has been employed as a kind of proof text for the alleged scientific necessity of individualist explanation. Our alternative exposition renders the discussion of (...)

  • Emotionally Engaged Parent Versus Professional Teacher: Strategies for Maintaining Borders Between the Dual Teacher-Parent Role in School.Lucia Hargašová - 2022 - Human Affairs 32 (1):84-100.
The paper presents findings on primary teachers’ and other school actors’ constructions of the teacher and parental role. Specifically, it focuses on strategies for maintaining borders between the personal (parent) and professional (teacher) roles in school environments in Slovakia. We approached the concepts of role and identity from the perspective of social constructivism and symbolic interactionism. Thirty-one interviews and focus groups with school actors were analysed using critical discourse analysis. In the next step, discourses on managing the dual role were (...)

  • Less Expectation, Less Pain: Low Wealth Alleviates Sense of Unfairness.Guanxiong Pei, Jia Jin, Taihao Li & Cheng Fang - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Objective wealth plays an important role in social interaction and economic decision making. Previous studies indicate that objective wealth of others may influence the way we participate in resources allocation. However, the effect of objective wealth on responses to fairness-related resource distribution is far from clear, as are the underlying neural processes. To address this issue, we dynamically manipulated proposers’ objective wealth and analyzed participants’ behavior as responders in a modified Ultimatum Game, during which event-related potentials were recorded. Behavioral results (...)

  • Global configurations of indigenous identities, movements and pathways.Priti Singh - 2018 - Thesis Eleven 145 (1):10-27.
The social science literature on identity politics around questions of race and ethnicity is profuse, prolix and contentious. Indigenous identity politics have seen a parallel growth and are equally complex. While there are analogies and overlaps, indigenous identities and social movements are neither conceptually nor empirically a sub-set of ethnic identities. The central issue of indigenous groups is the place of first peoples in relation to the nation-state system. This takes different forms in old world states of Asia and Africa (...)

  • Becoming Socrates: Five elements of the consecration process and the case of Jan Patočka.Dominik Želinský - 2020 - European Journal of Social Theory 23 (3):370-388.
This article explores the phenomenon of consecration, which, so far, has been neglected by sociologists of intellectuals. Contrary to the common Bourdieusian approach to consecration, which conflates it with legitimization, consecration is conceptualized as a process of the symbolic elevation of a figure, or an object, to the level of sacred symbols relevant to a particular community. Five analytically distinctive elements are identified that constitute the consecration process and a proposed framework is applied to disentangle the consecration of the Czech (...)

  • Toward a General Theory of Institutional Autonomy.Seth Abrutyn - 2009 - Sociological Theory 27 (4):449 - 465.
Institutional differentiation has been one of the central concerns of sociology since the days of Auguste Comte. However, the overarching tendency among institutionalists such as Durkheim or Spencer has been to treat the process of differentiation from a macro, "outside in" perspective. Missing from this analysis is how institutional differentiation occurs from the "inside out, "or through the efforts and struggles of individual and corporate actors. Despite the recent efforts of the "new institutionalism" to fill in this gap, a closer (...)
