  1. (1 other version)Place-related identities through texts: From interdisciplinary theory to research agenda.Emma Charlton, Dominic Wyse, Gabrielle Cliff Hodges, Maria Nikolajeva, Pam Pointon & Liz Taylor - 2011 - British Journal of Educational Studies 59 (1):63 - 74.
The implications of the transdisciplinary spatial turn are attracting growing interest in a broad range of areas related to education. This paper draws on a methodology for interdisciplinary thinking in order to articulate a new theoretical configuration of place-related identity, and its implications for a research agenda. The new configuration is created through an analysis of place-related identities in narrative theory, texts and literacy processes. The emerging research agenda focuses on the ways children perceive and represent their place-related identities through (...)

  • Globalisation, globalism and cosmopolitanism as an educational ideal.Marianna Papastephanou - 2005 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 37 (4):533–551.
In this paper, I discuss globalisation as an empirical reality that is in a complex relation to its corresponding discourse and in a critical distance from the cosmopolitan ideal. I argue that failure to grasp the distinctions between globalisation, globalism, and cosmopolitanism derives from mistaken identifications of the Is with the Ought and leads to naïve and ethnocentric glorifications of the potentialities of globalisation. Conversely, drawing the appropriate distinctions helps us articulate a more critical approach to contemporary cultural phenomena, and (...)

  • Toward an educational sphereology: Air, wind, and materialist pedagogy.Derek R. Ford & Weili Zhao - 2018 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 50 (5):528-537.
It’s not uncommon for people to make reference to atmospheres, including in relationship with educational spaces. In this article, we investigate educational atmospheres by turning to Western and Chinese literature on the air and wind. We pursue this task in three phases. First, we examine the Western literature to see the possible strings of thought that would help us reinvigorate the element of air/atmosphere as a foundational component of an educational sphere. Second, we historicize the Chinese notion of wind as (...)

  • Inspiration in Surprising Places: Searching for a Civic Dimension in Financial Literacy.Eran Tamir & Roei Davidson - 2020 - British Journal of Educational Studies 68 (2):197-217.
Establishing Financial Literacy (FL) programs for K-12 students is an emerging concern for policymakers worldwide. Such programs esteem the market a preferred arena for economic decision-making than the civic arena. In parallel, media organizations in many capitalist economies are devoting increasing resources to popular coverage of finance, which could be regarded as an informal form of FL. We build on the distinction between episodic and thematic framing to consider two divergent approaches to FL in Israel: one developed by a non-profit (...)

  • Walls and Laws: Proximity, distance and the doubleness of the border.Marianna Papastephanou - 2011 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 43 (3):209-224.
In this article, I explore the way in which proximity and distance have been made relevant to cosmopolitanism and I discuss the significance contemporary theory attributes to border crossing. By employing colonial border crossing and its rationalization as an example, and by drawing from Alain Badiou's critique of political philosophy, I expose some of the problems of facile and faddish approaches to planetary movement. I argue that the real borders to be crossed by true cosmopolitans are internal and, regrettably, traversible, (...)
