  1. Metaplasticity and the boundaries of social cognition: exploring scalar transformations in social interaction and intersubjectivity.Alexander Aston - 2019 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 18 (1):65-89.
Through the application of Material Engagement Theory to enactivist analyses of social cognition, this paper seeks to examine the role of material culture in shaping the development of intersubjectivity and long-term scalar transformations in social interaction. The deep history of human sociality reveals a capacity for communities to self-organise at radically emergent scales across a variety of temporal and spatial ranges. This ability to generate and participate in heterogenous, multiscalar relationships and identities demonstrates the developmental plasticity of human intersubjectivity. Perhaps (...)

  • Institutions and other things: critical hermeneutics, postphenomenology and material engagement theory.Tailer G. Ransom & Shaun Gallagher - 2023 - AI and Society 38 (6):2189-2196.
Don Ihde and Lambros Malafouris (Philosophy and Technology 32:195–214, 2019) have argued that “we are homo faber not just because we make things but also because we are made by them.” The emphasis falls on the idea that the things that we create, use, rely on—that is, those things with which we engage—have a recursive effect on human existence. We make things, but we also make arrangements, many of which are long-standing, material, social, normative, economic, institutional, and/or political, and many (...)

  • Cultural evolutionary psychology is still evolutionary psychology.Marco Fenici & Duilio Garofoli - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42:e176.
The cognitive gadgets theory proposes to reform evolutionary psychology by replacing the standard nativist and internalist approach to modularity with a cultural constructivist one. However, the resulting “cultural evolutionary psychology” still maintains some controversial aspects of the original neo-Darwinian paradigm. These assumptions are unnecessary to the cognitive gadgets theory and can be eliminated without significant conceptual loss.

  • Toward an Enactive Conception of Productive Practices: Beyond Material Agency.Ezequiel A. Di Paolo, Diego Lawler & Andrés Pablo Vaccari - 2023 - Philosophy and Technology 36 (2):1-22.
We examine the question of material agency as raised in material engagement theory (MET). Insofar as MET tends to highlight the causal roles played by extra-bodily material flows in human practices, the term “material agency” does not sufficiently distinguish cases in which these flows are part of an agentive engagement from cases in which they are not. We propose an operational criterion to effect such a distinction. We claim this criterion is organizational, i.e., systemic, and not causal. In the enactive (...)
