  • A corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis of news reporting on China’s air pollution in the official Chinese English-language press.Guofeng Wang - 2018 - Discourse and Communication 12 (6):645-662.
This corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis of news reports on air pollution published from 2008 through 2015 by China Daily, China’s largest official English-language newspaper, reveals a significant attitudinal shift around the end of 2011 as regards public awareness of increasing air pollution levels in China and related public criticism. It also constructs a clear image of the increasing determination and resolve of the Chinese central government over the course of this 8-year period to take action to effectively reduce air pollution. • Negotiating national identities in conflict situations: The discursive reproduction of the Sino-US trade war in China’s news reports.Yunfeng Ge & Hong Wang - 2020 - Discourse and Communication 14 (1):65-83.
The force of globalization has greatly challenged people’s conceptualization of national identity. The traditional definition of national identity as being distinct, stable and generated by such internal factors as ethnic, religion, citizenship and so on, has been replaced by the understanding that national identity is invested with more dynamic and complex features and is actually constructed differently in different situations. By following Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive perspective in critical discourse analysis and drawing on the 47 news reports collected on the websites (...)

  • Competing discursive constructions of China’s smog in Chinese and Anglo-American English-language newspapers: A corpus-assisted discourse study.Chaoyuan Li & Ming Liu - 2017 - Discourse and Communication 11 (4):386-403.
This article presents a corpus-assisted discourse study of the representations of China’s smog in one Chinese and three Anglo-American English-language newspapers from 2011 to 2014. The findings suggest that they converge in representing China’s smog as a kind of severe air pollution that has some consequences on residents in China and poses a problem that the government must tackle. However, the Chinese English-language newspaper prefers to represent it as a kind of weather phenomenon without serious impact on public health and (...)

  • Transcultural political communication from the perspective of proximization theory: A comparative analysis on the corpuses of the Sino–US trade war.Guoliang Zhang, Yingfei He, Danyang Zhang & Lijuan Chen - 2020 - Discourse and Communication 14 (4):341-361.
Previous studies have shown the operational potential in political discourse analysis from the proximization perspective. This study adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to analyze political communication across transcultural contexts, especially in the cyber discourse space. Based on the spatial–temporal–axiological model, we compare the journalistic discourses on two social media platforms by China Xinhua News Agency, an official speaker for China worldwide. The corpuses are constructed with microblogs on Weibo in Chinese and Twitter in English containing key words of Sino–US trade war. (...)
