  1. Moral reasoning as a determinant of organizational citizenship behaviors: A study in the public accounting profession. [REVIEW]John J. Ryan - 2001 - Journal of Business Ethics 33 (3):233 - 244.
This study examines the relationship between an employee's level of moral reasoning and a form of work performance known as organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). Prior research in the public accounting profession has found higher levels of moral reasoning to be positively related to various types of ethical behavior. This study extends the ethical domain of accounting behaviors to include OCB. Analysis of respondents from a public accounting firm in the northeast region of the United States (n = 107) support a (...)

  • Examining the construct of organizational justice: A meta-analytic evaluation of relations with work attitudes and behaviors. [REVIEW]Chockalingam Viswesvaran & Deniz S. Ones - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 38 (3):193 - 203.
The nomological net for the construct of organizational justice was investigated. The estimated true score correlation between procedural and distributive justice (N = 4,696, K = 16) was 0.66. The patterns of correlations of both procedural and distributive justice with job satisfaction, OCB, commitment, and productivity were also meta-analytically estimated. Procedural justice was associated to a greater extent than distributive justice with organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviors and productivity. Distributive and procedural justice correlated similarly with job satisfaction. Partial correlations and (...)

  • A role for business ethics in facilitating trustworthiness.N. F. Bews & G. J. Rossouw - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 39 (4):377 - 390.
The relationship between ethics and trust is ambiguous as ethics can promote trust, whilst trust can simultaneously be abused resulting in unethical behaviour. In this contribution to the debate on trust and ethics the focus is specifically on the role that ethics can play in facilitating trustworthiness. The article starts with a definition of the concept trustworthiness. It then reports on an empirical longitudinal study on trustworthiness that was conducted in a South African company in the insurance industry. The facilitators (...)

  • Doing unto others: The reciprocity of helping behavior in organizations. [REVIEW]John R. Deckop, Caril C. Cirka & Lynne M. Andersson - 2003 - Journal of Business Ethics 47 (2):101 - 113.
Reciprocity is a fundamental aspect of social life, and a phenomenon studied from a wide variety of philosophical, theological, and social scientific perspectives. In this study, we use social exchange theory to investigate why employees help other employees. We hypothesize, based on the norm of reciprocity (Gouldner, 1960), that a significant cause of an employee''s helping behavior is how much organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) the employee has received from coworkers. To provide evidence of the discriminant validity of OCB received as (...)

  • Organizational trustworthiness: An international perspective. [REVIEW]Cam Caldwell & Stephen E. Clapham - 2003 - Journal of Business Ethics 47 (4):349 - 364.
Although trust has been widely recognized as a vital component ofrelationships and a critical element to the success of organizations, the literature describing trust and trustworthiness is known for itsvarying perspectives and its inconsistencies. Trustworthiness has beenidentified as a condition precedent to the development of trust.Building upon the established constructs of interpersonaltrustworthiness, we propose a related model containing the sevenconstructs of Competence, Legal Compliance, Responsibility to Inform,Quality Assurance, Procedural Fairness, Interactional Cour-tesy, andFinancial Balance. Citing evidence from trust-related literature, weidentify the utility (...)
