In 1960, E. P. Wigner, a joint winner of the 1963 Nobel Prize for Physics, published a paper titled On the Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences [61]. This paper can be construed as an examination and affirmation of Galileo's tenet that “The book of nature is written in the language of mathematics”. To this effect, Wigner presented a large number of examples that demonstrate the effectiveness of mathematics in accurately describing physical phenomena. Wigner viewed these examples as (...)

  • Many-valued reflexive autoepistemic logic.C. Koutras & S. Zachos - 2000 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 8 (1):33-54.
In this paper, we contribute to a series of results on the family of many-valued modal logics which as been recently introduced by M. Fitting in [8, 9, 10, 12]. In this family, the underlying propositional logics employ finite Heyting algebras for the space of truth values and the monotonic modal logics correspond to possible-worlds models with many-valued accessibility relations. There exist also modal non-monotonic counterparts in the McDermott & Doyle fashion. In [10], M. Fitting provided a many-valued generalization of (...)

  • Tools and techniques in modal logic.Marcus Kracht - 1999 - New York: Elsevier.
This book treats modal logic as a theory, with several subtheories, such as completeness theory, correspondence theory, duality theory and transfer theory and is intended as a course in modal logic for students who have had prior contact with modal logic and who wish to study it more deeply. It presupposes training in mathematical or logic. Very little specific knowledge is presupposed, most results which are needed are proved in this book.

  • Tableaus for many-valued modal logic.Melvin Fitting - 1995 - Studia Logica 55 (1):63 - 87.
We continue a series of papers on a family of many-valued modal logics, a family whose Kripke semantics involves many-valued accessibility relations. Earlier papers in the series presented a motivation in terms of a multiple-expert semantics. They also proved completeness of sequent calculus formulations for the logics, formulations using a cut rule in an essential way. In this paper a novel cut-free tableau formulation is presented, and its completeness is proved.

  • Canonical modal logics and ultrafilter extensions.J. F. A. K. van Benthem - 1979 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 44 (1):1-8.
In this paper thecanonicalmodal logics, a kind of complete modal logics introduced in K. Fine [4] and R. I. Goldblatt [5], will be characterized semantically using the concept of anultrafilter extension, an operation on frames inspired by the algebraic theory of modal logic. Theorem 8 of R. I. Goldblatt and S. K. Thomason [6] characterizing the modally definable Σ⊿-elementary classes of frames will follow as a corollary. A second corollary is Theorem 2 of [4] which states that any complete modal (...)

  • Canonicity and Completeness Results for Many-Valued Modal Logics.Costas D. Koutras, Christos Nomikos & Pavlos Peppas - 2002 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 12 (1):7-42.
We prove frame determination results for the family of many-valued modal logics introduced by M. Fitting in the early '90s. Each modal language of this family is based on a Heyting algebra, which serves as the space of truth values, and is interpreted on an interesting version of possible-worlds semantics: the modal frames are directed graphs whose edges are labelled with an element of the underlying Heyting algebra. We introduce interesting generalized forms of the classical axioms D, T, B, 4, (...)

  • A Catalog ofWeak Many-Valued Modal Axioms and their Corresponding Frame Classes.Costas D. Koutras - 2003 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 13 (1):47-71.
In this paper we provide frame definability results for weak versions of classical modal axioms that can be expressed in Fitting's many-valued modal languages. These languages were introduced by M. Fitting in the early '90s and are built on Heyting algebras which serve as the space of truth values. The possible-worlds frames interpreting these languages are directed graphs whose edges are labelled with an element of the underlying Heyting algebra, providing us a form of many-valued accessibility relation. Weak axioms of (...)

  • Algebraic polymodal logic: a survey.R. Goldblatt - 2000 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 8 (4):393-450.
This is a review of those aspects of the theory of varieties of Boolean algebras with operators that emphasise connections with modal logic and structural properties that are related to natural properties of logical systems. It begins with a survey of the duality that exists between BAO's and relational structures, focusing on the notions of bounded morphisms, inner substructures, disjoint and bounded unions, and canonical extensions of structures that originate in the study of validity-preserving operations on Kripke frames. This duality is (...)
