  1. The effect of published reports of unethical conduct on stock prices.Spuma M. Rao & J. Brooke Hamilton - 1996 - Journal of Business Ethics 15 (12):1321 - 1330.
This study adds to the empirical evidence supporting a significant connection between ethics and profitability by examining the connection between published reports of unethical behaviour by publicly traded U.S. and multinational firms and the performance of their stock. Using reports of unethical behaviour published in the Wall Street Journal from 1989 to 1993, the analysis shows that the actual stock performance for those companies was lower than the expected market adjusted returns. Unethical conduct by firms which is discovered and publicized (...)

  • What’s Wrong with "Deceptive" Advertising?Daniel Attas - 1999 - Journal of Business Ethics 21 (1):49-59.
In this paper I present a moral account of the legal notion of deceptive advertising. I argue that no harmful consequences to the consumer need follow from a deceptive advertisement as such, and I suggest instead that one should focus on the consequences of permitting the practise of deceptive advertising on society as a whole. After a brief account of deceptive advertising, I move to discuss the role of the reasonable person standard in its definition. One interpretation of this standard (...)

  • Communicative action and corporate annual reports.Kristi Yuthas, Rodney Rogers & Jesse F. Dillard - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 41 (1-2):141 - 157.
Annual reports are an important element in the genre of corporate public discourse. The reporting practices mandated by the Securities and Exchange Commission for all publicly traded corporations are intended to render the annual reports a legitimate and trustworthy medium through which management communicates information related to the financial performance of the firm. The following discussion represents an inaugural attempt to investigate the ethical characteristics of the discourse found in corporate annual reports using Habermas' principles of communicative action. In preparing (...)

  • The effect of the recent insider-trading scandal on stock prices of securities firms.Khalil M. Torabzadeh, Dan Davidson & Hamid Assar - 1989 - Journal of Business Ethics 8 (4):299 - 303.
This paper addresses the impact of the unethical business conduct of a few individuals that shook the financial market in 1986. Specifically, in the study undertaken for this paper, the wealth status of the shareholders of securities firms was examined in relation to the public disclosure of the insider-trading scandals involving Dennis Levine, Ivan Boesky, and their confederates. It was hypothesized that the expected market-adjusted stock returns for the securities firms would be negative as a result of the scandals. The (...)

  • Business ethics: A quantitative analysis of the impact of unethical behavior by publicly traded corporations. [REVIEW]Deborah L. Gunthorpe - 1997 - Journal of Business Ethics 16 (5):537-543.
This study examines whether the financial markets penalize public corporations for unethical business practices. Using event study methodology, it is found that upon the announcement that a firm is under investigation or has in some way engaged in unethical behavior, a statistically significant negative abnormal (excess) return is found. This suggests that firms are indeed penalized for their unethical actions.
