This paper is about the topic of psychologism in the work of Kazimierz Twardowski and my aim is to revisit this important issue in light of recent publications from, and on Twardowski’s works. I will first examine the genesis of psychologism in the young Twardowski’s work; secondly, I will examine Twardowski’s picture theory of meaning and Husserl’s criticism in Logical Investigations; the third part is about Twardowski’s recognition and criticism of his psychologism in his lectures on the psychology of thinking; (...) the fourth and fifth parts provide an overview of Twardowski’s paper “Actions and Products” while the sixth part addresses the psychologism issue in the last part of this paper through the delineation of psychology and the humanities. I shall conclude this study with a brief assessment of Twardowski’s solution to psychologism. (shrink)

Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) und Ludwig Wittgenstein gelten als die geistigen Väter der analytischen Philosophie. Das wissenschaftliche Schaffen Gottlob Freges hat wie kein anderes nach Aristoteles die Logik in ihrer theoretischen Erscheinungsform und in ihrer praktischen Relevanz grundlegend verändert. Seine logisch-semantischen Untersuchungen haben noch immer auf Philosophie und Sprachwissenschaft großen Einfluß. Doch wer war dieser Mann, der die Geistesgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts mitgestaltete, dessen Rückführung logischen Schließens auf mechanisch kontrollierte Elementarschritte den Weg zur Logik der elektronischen Datenverarbeitung eröffnete? Zwar gibt es (...) Arbeiten, die sich mit besonderen Seiten oder speziellen Zeiten von Freges Leben beschäftigen, eine umfassende Biographie über ihn gab es jedoch bislang nicht. Diese Lücke schließt Lothar Kreisers Buch. Freges Leben wird biographisch zunächst in dem Kontext der Stadt und Stadtschule Wismar, dann in dem der Stadt und der Universität Jena eingebettet rekonstruiert. Regional übergreifende politische und wissenschaftliche Vorgänge werden einbezogen, um verbürgten konkreten Ereignissen aus Freges Leben einen für das Verstehen tieferen und festeren Rahmen zu geben. Seine Mitwirkung in Kommisionen und Gesellschaften kommt ebenso zur Sprache wie die Wurzeln seines wissenschaftlichen Lebenswerkes, seine Beziehungen zu anderen Persönlichkeiten und deren Bestrebungen, aber auch der Wandel in seinen politischen Überzeugungen. Die Biographie setzt keine speziellen Fachkenntnisse, nur Interesse an einem spannenden Abschnitt der Wissenschaftsgeschichte, fokussiert auf die Person Gottlob Frege, voraus. "Gottlob Frege: Leben - Werk - Zeit" ist Biographie und Millieustudie zugleich. (shrink)

When Benno Kerry (1858?89) died at the age of 30 he was already well?known for his competent and thoroughgoing philosophical criticism of Cantor?s set theory and Frege?s early philosophy of mathematics.Before his death he was working on a theory of limits (Grenzbegriffe) which was an elaboration of his Habilitationsschrift of 1884 and of which only a first part was published posthumously.This paper gives a survey of Kerry?s basic biographical data, and a first description of his Habilitationsschrift which had been missing (...) for a long time but was found by chance in the Nachlass of the German philosopher Leonard Nelson. Phenomenology, according to Husserl, is meant to be philosophy as rigorous science. It was Franz Brentano who inspired him to pursue the ideal of scientific philosophy. Though Husserl began his philosophical career as an orthodox disciple of Brentano, he eventually began to have doubts about this orientation. The Logische Unterschungen is the result of such doubts. Especially after the publication of that work, he became increasingly convinced that, in the interests of scientific philosophy, he had to go in a direction (...) which diverged from Brentano and other members of this school (`Brentanists') who believed in the same ideal. An attempt is made here to ascertain Husserl's philosophical relation to Brentano and certain other Brentanists (Carl Stumpf, Benno Kerry, Kasimir Twardowski, Alexius Meinong, and Anton Marty). The crucial turning point in the development of these relations is to be found in the essay which Husserl wrote in 1894 (particularly in response to Twardowski) under the title `Intentional Objects' (which is translated as an appendix in this volume). This study will be of interest to historians of philosophy and phenomenology in particular, but also to anyone concerned with the ideal of scientific philosophy. (shrink)

The purpose of this book is to highlight Carl Stumpf's contributions to philosophy and to assess some of the aspects of his work. This book brings together several specialists of Stumpf and the school of Franz Brentano, and includes fourteen original studies (in English and German) on the various aspects of Stumpf's philosophy, and some of his unpublished writings. This book is divided into four sections, and also includes a general introduction on the reception and actuality of Stumpf's philosophy. The (...) first section examines the historical sources of his philosophy, the second examines some of the central themes of his work and the third examines his relationship to other philosophers. The fourth section consists of notes taken by Husserl during Stumpf's lectures on metaphysics in Halle, Stumpf's introduction to the edition of his correspondence with Brentano, which he prepared in 1929, and some important letters pertaining to this correspondence. This book also provides a comprehensive bibliography of Stumpf's works. (shrink)
