    If understanding is factive, the propositions that express an understanding are true. I argue that a factive conception of understanding is unduly restrictive.     It is argued that a popular way of accounting for the distinctive value of knowledge by appeal to the distinctive value of cognitive achievements fails because it is a mistake to identify knowledge with cognitive achievements.
