    The paper proposes that gender can be used to explore alternative epistemologies represented within AI systems. Current research on feminist epistemology is reviewed then criticisms of the main philosophical position dominant in AI are outlined. These criticisms say little about epistemology and nothing about gender. It is suggested that the way forward might be found within the sociology of scientific knowledge as its approach is in accord with the postmodernist view of feminist epistemology in seeing knowledge as a cultural product.     This paper decribes the theoretical and methodological issues involved in the social shaping of technology and work, with particular reference to human centred computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems. Conventional approaches to the understanding and shaping of the relationship between technology, work and human development are criticised, and an alternative, human centred approach is outlined. The methods and processes whereby the design of human centred CIM systems may be shaped and evaluated are then described and appraised.

    Participant observation, focus groups, and in-depth interviews were used to study the professionalization of women enrolled in engineering school. Two aspects of the professionalization process were examined: adapting to the professional culture and internalizing the professional identity.     Women have been excluded from the mainstream development of computer hardware and software. Consequently there is an imbalance in the masculine and feminine characteristics, functioning and applications of computing. A masculine approach is encoded into the technical personality of computing, and in the skills and knowledge necessary to utilise computers. The feminine perspective broadens the scope and objectives of computing. This paper examines the current computing culture, and proposes new models for computing that embrace the methodology of creative thinking.
