  1. On universal modules with pure embeddings.Thomas G. Kucera & Marcos Mazari-Armida - 2020 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 66 (4):395-408.
We show that certain classes of modules have universal models with respect to pure embeddings: Let R be a ring, T a first‐order theory with an infinite model extending the theory of R‐modules and (where ⩽pp stands for “pure submodule”). Assume has the joint embedding and amalgamation properties. If or, then has a universal model of cardinality λ. As a special case, we get a recent result of Shelah [28, 1.2] concerning the existence of universal reduced torsion‐free abelian groups with (...)

  • Strong splitting in stable homogeneous models.Tapani Hyttinen & Saharon Shelah - 2000 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 103 (1-3):201-228.
In this paper we study elementary submodels of a stable homogeneous structure. We improve the independence relation defined in Hyttinen 167–182). We apply this to prove a structure theorem. We also show that dop and sdop are essentially equivalent, where the negation of dop is the property we use in our structure theorem and sdop implies nonstructure, see Hyttinen.

  • Type-amalgamation properties and polygroupoids in stable theories.John Goodrick, Byunghan Kim & Alexei Kolesnikov - 2015 - Journal of Mathematical Logic 15 (1):1550004.
We show that in a stable first-order theory, the failure of higher dimensional type amalgamation can always be witnessed by algebraic structures that we call n-ary polygroupoids. This generalizes a result of Hrushovski in [16] that failures of 4-amalgamation are witnessed by definable groupoids. The n-ary polygroupoids are definable in a mild expansion of the language.

  • Abstract elementary classes and accessible categories.Tibor Beke & Jirí Rosický - 2012 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 163 (12):2008-2017.
We investigate properties of accessible categories with directed colimits and their relationship with categories arising from ShelahʼsElementary Classes. We also investigate ranks of objects in accessible categories, and the effect of accessible functors on ranks.

  • Categoricity in multiuniversal classes.Nathanael Ackerman, Will Boney & Sebastien Vasey - 2019 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 170 (11):102712.
The third author has shown that Shelah's eventual categoricity conjecture holds in universal classes: class of structures closed under isomorphisms, substructures, and unions of chains. We extend this result to the framework of multiuniversal classes. Roughly speaking, these are classes with a closure operator that is essentially algebraic closure (instead of, in the universal case, being essentially definable closure). Along the way, we prove in particular that Galois (orbital) types in multiuniversal classes are determined by their finite restrictions, generalizing a (...)

  • (1 other version)Accessible categories, saturation and categoricity.Jiří Rosický - 1997 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 62 (3):891-901.
Model-theoretic concepts of saturation and categoricity are studied in the context of accessible categories. Accessible categories which are categorical in a strong sense are related to categories of $M$-sets ($M$ is a monoid). Typical examples of such categories are categories of $\lambda$-saturated objects.

We deal with the existence of universal members in a given cardinality for several classes. First, we deal with classes of abelian groups, specifically with the existence of universal members in cardinalities which are strong limit singular of countable cofinality or λ=λℵ0. We use versions of being reduced—replacing Q by a subring —and get quite accurate results for the existence of universals in a cardinal, for embeddings and for pure embeddings. Second, we deal with the oak property, a property of (...)
