  • (1 other version)Moral Sensitivity in Psychiatric Practice.Kim Lützén, Mats Evertzon & Conny Nordin - 1997 - Nursing Ethics 4 (6):472-482.
This study reports the results of a study of Swedish psychiatrists’ responses to moral statements related to decision making in the psychiatric context. Use was made of the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, a modified instrument previously constructed from a theory of moral sensitivity. This Likert-type scale contains 30 items constructed from the following categories: interpersonal orientation, structuring moral meaning, benevolence, modifying autonomy, experiencing moral conflict, and trust in medical knowledge and principles of care. The purpose was to identify possible differences in (...)

  • Transforming Desolation into Consolation: the meaning of being in situations of ethical difficulty in intensive care.Anna Söderberg, Fredricka Gilje & Astrid Norberg - 1999 - Nursing Ethics 6 (5):357-373.
The purpose of this phenomenological-hermeneutic study was to illuminate the meaning of being in ethically difficult care situations. The participants were 20 enrolled nurses employed in six intensive care units in Sweden. The results reveal a complex human process manifested in relation to one’s inner self and the other person, which transforms desolation into consolation through becoming present to the suffering other when perceiving fragility rather than tragedy. The main point of significance here is for all health professionals to create (...)

  • A Fundamental Ethical Approach to Nursing: some proposals for ethics education.Chris Gastmans - 2002 - Nursing Ethics 9 (5):494-507.
The purpose of this article is to explore a fundamental ethical approach to nursing and to suggest some proposals, based on this approach, for nursing ethics education. The major point is that the kind of nursing ethics education that is given reflects the theory that is held of nursing. Three components of a fundamental ethical view on nursing are analysed more deeply: (1) nursing considered as moral practice; (2) the intersubjective character of nursing; and (3) moral perception. It is argued (...)

  • Caring About - Caring For: moral obligations and work responsibilities in intensive care nursing.Agneta Cronqvist, Töres Theorell, Tom Burns & Kim Lützén - 2004 - Nursing Ethics 11 (1):63-76.
The aim of this study was to analyse experiences of moral concerns in intensive care nursing. The theoretical perspective of the study is based on relational ethics, also referred to as ethics of care. The participants were 36 intensive care nurses from 10 general, neonatal and thoracic intensive care units. The structural characteristics of the units were similar: a high working pace, advanced technology, budget restrictions, recent reorganization, and shortage of experienced nurses. The data consisted of the participants’ examples of (...)

  • Moral Sensitivity: some differences between nurses and physicians.Kim Lützén, Agneta Johansson & Gun Nordström - 2000 - Nursing Ethics 7 (6):520-530.
We report the results of an investigation of nurses’ and physicians’ sensitivity to ethical dimensions of clinical practice. The sample consisted of 113 physicians working in general medical settings, 665 psychiatrists, 150 nurses working in general medical settings, and 145 nurses working in psychiatry. The instrument used was the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire (MSQ), a self-reporting Likert-type questionnaire consisting of 30 assumptions related to moral sensitivity in health care practice. Each of these assumptions was categorized into a theoretical dimension of moral (...)

  • A Study of the Ethical Sensitivity of Physicians in Turkey.Nermin Ersoy & Ümit N. Gündoğmuş - 2003 - Nursing Ethics 10 (5):472-484.
In order to prepare bioethics and clinical ethics courses for clinicians in Turkey, we needed to know the attitudes of physicians when placed in ethically difficult care situations. We presented four cases to 207 physicians who are members of the Physicians’ Association in Kocaeli, Turkey. Depending on the decisions they made in each case, we determined whether they were aware of the ethical aspects of the cases and the principles they chose as a basis for their decisions. We aimed to (...)

  • Meeting Ethical Challenges in Acute Care Work as Narrated by Enrolled Nurses.Venke Sørlie, Annica Larsson Kihlgren & Mona Kihlgren - 2004 - Nursing Ethics 11 (2):179-188.
Five enrolled nurses (ENs) were interviewed as part of a comprehensive investigation into the narratives of registered nurses, ENs and patients about their experiences in an acute care ward. The ward opened in 1997 and provides patient care for a period of up to three days, during which time a decision has to be made regarding further care elsewhere or a return home. The ENs were interviewed concerning their experience of being in ethically difficult care situations and of acute care (...)
