Modern modal logic originated as a branch of philosophical logic in which the concepts of necessity and possibility were investigated by means of a pair of dual operators that are added to a propositional or first-order language. The field owes much of its flavor and success to the introduction in the 1950s of the “possible-worlds” semantics in which the modal operators are interpreted via some “accessibility relation” connecting possible worlds. In subsequent years, modal logic has received attention as an attractive (...) approach towards formalizing such diverse notions as time, knowledge, or action. Nowadays, modal logics are applied in various disciplines, ranging from economics to linguistics and computer science. Consequently, there is by now a large variety of modal languages, with an even greater wealth of interpretations. For instance, many applications require a poly-modal framework consisting of a language with a family of modal operators and a semantics in which the corresponding accessibility relations are connected somehow. Let a logical propositional calculus L0 be given. We consider arbitrary extensions of L0 by adding finitely many new axiom schemes and rules of inference. We say that a property of P of logical calculi is strongly decidable over L0 if there is an algorithm which for any finite system Rul of axiom schemes and rules of inference decides whether the system L0 + Rul has the property P or not. We consider only so-called structural rules of inference which are (...) invariant under substitution. We remind that P is called decidable over L0 if there is such an algorithm for extensions of L0 with finitely many axiom schemes . In our paper we give a method of proving strong decidability results.We take as L0 some standard calculus for intuitionistic propositional logic Int or modal logic S4 and find a number of properties strongly decidable over L0, in particular, equivalence to some known logic, pretabularity, interpolation property over Int, local tabularity over S4, which are known to be decidable. It is proved that there are exactly 16 superintuitionistic propositional logics with the projective Beth property. These logics are finitely axiomatizable and have the finite model property. Simultaneously, all varieties of Heyting algebras with strong epimorphisms surjectivity are found.

In this paper it will be shown that the Beth definability property corresponds to surjectiveness of epimorphisms in abstract algebraic logic. This generalizes a result by I. Németi (cf. [11, Theorem 5.6.10]). Moreover, an equally general characterization of the weak Beth property will be given. This gives a solution to Problem 14 in [20]. Finally, the characterization of the projective Beth property for varieties of modal algebras by L. Maksimova (see [15]) will be shown to hold for the larger class (...) of semantically algebraizable logics. (shrink)

The aim of this book is to present the fundamental theoretical results concerning inference rules in deductive formal systems. Primary attention is focused on: admissible or permissible inference rules the derivability of the admissible inference rules the structural completeness of logics the bases for admissible and valid inference rules. There is particular emphasis on propositional non-standard logics (primary, superintuitionistic and modal logics) but general logical consequence relations and classical first-order theories are also considered. Proofs of results, many of which are not readily available elsewhere, are also included. The book is written at a level appropriate for first-year graduate students in mathematics or computer science. Although some knowledge of elementary logic and universal algebra are necessary, the first chapter includes all the results from universal algebra and logic that the reader needs.
