This book, which was completed just before Jean Hampton’s untimely death in April 1996, is an admirable hybrid. Although it successfully achieves its stated purpose of “acquaint[ing] the student of political philosophy both with [its] questions and with the various answers to them proposed by philosophers since the ancient Greeks”, it is, at the same time, quite an original work—one that can be read with real profit by professional philosophers as well as students.

Notes and Discussions Calvin and Hobbes, or, Hobbes as an Orthodox Christian Three years ago, in the proceedings of an Italian conference on Hobbes and Spinoza, I published an article arguing that Hobbes was at best a deist, and most likely an atheist? In a recent book on Hobbes, A. P. Martinich devoted an appendix to criticizing that article, as part of his case that Hobbes is not merely a theist, but an orthodox Christian, and specifically, that he had "a (...) strong commitment" to the Calvinist branch of the Church of England.' It has been suggested that I respond to Martinich's rebuttal, and I think I should. Martinich's work is arguably the best available book of its kind.3 Pursuing the issues this book raises may help us to see why it is worth our while to be curious about the differences between the English text of Leviathan, first published in 165 x, and the Latin text of that work, first published in 1668. Thomas Hobbes is arguably the greatest of all English philosophers. In the second half of the twentieth century, he has been the subject of sustained critical attention. Hobbes was capable of powerful argument on virtually any level, whether logical, scriptural or historical. And he has attracted attention in all these areas and more questions of historical method, language and linguistics, metaphysics, ethics, law, politics, science and religion. Hobbes has been examined from a great variety of perspectives as an ethical positivist (...) and a deontologist, as a bourgeois advocate and a supporter of the aristocracy, as an absolutist and a proponent of parliamentary government, as a "conservative" and a "modern," as an atheist and a believer. The periodical literature on Hobbes is accordingly very rich, but it is also difficult to access. This study aims to re-establish the 17th century view that Leviathan by Hobbes, is profoundly antipathetic to orthodox Christianity. His work contained biblical exegesis and Christian theology to found a science of politics, which required the subversion of Christianity.

This full-length biography of the seminal British philosopher traces the course of his life and thought, illuminates the turbulent seventeenth-century milieu in which he worked, and examines his keystone work, "Leviathan.".

The problem with which I will deal is the result of a controversy centering around three plausible interpretations of Hobbes' theory of obligation. The three interpretations, called the mechanistic, the moral or natural law, and the individual rights interpretations all claim to be the correct description of Hobbes' intended theory of obligation. However, they seem to conflict and contradict each other although each has substantial textual evidence behind it. The question is whether or not Hobbes intended one only, or whether (...) he intended all three. If he intended all three then the problem of exclusivity and consistency must be addressed. ;In this dissertation I will maintain that Hobbes did intend all three theories and that, if we look carefully at his method of rhetorical argument we can solve the problems of the seeming contradictions and inconsistencies. I will argue that within a rhetorical framework all three interpretations serve the single purpose of trying to convince Hobbes' overall audience that they should accept the obligation to obey an absolute sovereign in their own best interest, but also for moral reasons. The three interpretations seem to function roughly as three language-games of justification intended for slightly different segments of Hobbes' audience. The mechanistic interpretation is directed toward that part of Hobbes' audience that are versed in the methods of the new science pioneered by Galileo; the moral or natural law interpretation is directed at Christians and more traditionalist thinkers; finally, the individual rights interpretation is directed at that portion of Hobbes' audience that see the individual as the focus of any theory of obligation. Taken together these three arguments are meant to convince the general audience of readers that they should submit themselves to the rule of an absolute sovereign and that they have an obligation to do so. I will use historical and linguistic analysis of Hobbes' intent and methods to support the contention that the three arguments are not contradictory in Hobbes' mind and that he did intend to present three different arguments for a single thesis.
