    The article assesses the achievements and limitations of the private regulation of global corporate conduct. Private regulation occurs through voluntary, private, nonstate industry and cross-industry codes that address labor practices, environmental performance, and human rights policies.     This paper provides an overview of the contemporary debate on the concepts and definitions of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Sustainability (CS). The conclusions, based on historical perspectives, philosophical analyses, impact of changing contexts and situations and practical considerations, show that "one solution fits all"-definition for CS(R) should be abandoned, accepting various and more specific definitions matching the development, awareness and ambition levels of organizations.

    We examine market reactions to publicly held multinational firms announcing their affiliation with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).     This study examines corporate social performance (CSP) as a multi-dimensional concept and relates each dimension to a variety of explanatory variables. Regression analysis is used to test the proposition that the determinants of CSP will vary with the dimension of CSP under investigation. The results of this exploratory analysis indicate they relate in unique patterns to the different measures of social performance. Implications for future research are discussed.
