  • 'What it makes sense to say': Education, philosophy and Peter Winch on social science.Paul Smeyers - 2006 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 40 (4):463–485.
This paper sets out Peter Winch's central ideas about the nature of the social sciences, and reappraises their potential for educational research. It is argued that the dichotomy between ‘reasons’ and ‘causes’ has done much harm, and that the important matter of understanding ‘what is real for us’ has recently been neglected. Winch's philosophy suggests a more adequate framework for educational research: one that embraces a pluralistic interpretive position, accommodating various methods and various kinds of understanding of the social, and (...)

  • Showing and Doing: Wittgenstein as a Pedagogical Philosopher.Michael A. Peters & Nicholas C. Burbules - 2008 - Routledge.
Three prominent Wittgenstein scholars introduce the broad educational significance of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s work to a wider audience of educational researchers and practitioners through provocative, innovative, and playful readings of his work. They vividly demonstrate the influence of his thinking and its centrality to understanding our contemporary condition. Wittgenstein fundamentally shaped contemporary theories of language, representation, cognition, and learning. The book also traces the “pedagogical turn” of his thinking during the period from 1920 to 1926. What is most radical about Wittgenstein’s (...)

In this book, Mary Midgely turns a spotlight on the fashionable view that we no longer need or use moral judgements. She shows how the question of whether or not we can make moral judgements must inevitably affect our attitudes to the law and its institutions, but also to events that occur in our daily lives.
