  1. Cultural approach to CDA.Dalia Gavriely-Nuri - 2012 - Critical Discourse Studies 9 (1):77-85.
This article describes a cultural approach to critical discourse analysis which aims at exposing the various ways in which cultural codes are embedded in discourse, and contribute to the reproduction of abuses of power. The article attempts to represent CCDA not only as a theoretical framework, but also as a practical tool for decoding the cultural ‘cargo’ contained within discourses. The article focusses on five major concepts: culture, discursive strategies, cultural codes, the global market of cultural codes and the culture (...)

  • As Charming as a Pig:The Discursive Construction of the Relationship Between Pigs and Humans.Arran Stibbe - 2003 - Society and Animals 11 (4):375-392.
In the past, pigs were kept near their guardians' homes, ate leftovers from their guardians' kitchens and enjoyed a generally close relationship with humans. The closeness of the relationship, combined with its ultimate end in the killing of the pig, led to a sense of shame . This shame manifested itself in negative expressions about pigs within the English language, which remain to this day. However, the relationship between humans and pigs is becoming increasingly distant, with decisions affecting pigs' lives (...)

  • Sense And Sustainability: The Paradoxes That Sustain.R. Kowalski - 2013 - World Futures 69 (2):75 - 88.
The Royal Society report updates the anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems services and our inability to rise to this challenge. Sustainable development is argued to be a linguistic device that has been instrumental in deflecting us from addressing the paradox at the heart of the oxymoron. The relationships between the social, environmental, and economic are explored together with the utility of the I = PAT equation, with reference to the Hardin Taboo, Jevons's, and Easterlin's paradoxes. A more prominent role for phronesis (...)

  • Humans, animals, and metaphors.Andrew Goatly - 2006 - Society and Animals 14 (1):15-37.
This article examines the ideological implications of different interpretations of the statement "Humans are animals." It contrasts theories that regard humans as literally sophisticated animals with those who interpret the statement metaphorically. Sociobiological theories, bolstered by metaphors in the dictionary of English emphasize competitiveness and aggression as features shared by humans and nonhuman animals. Other theories emphasize symbiosis and cooperation. Some of these theories are prescriptive—metaphor patterns in English reflect the strong tendency to regard animal behavior as something for humans (...)

  • Greenspeak: A Study of Environmental Discourse.Rom Harré, Jens Brockmeier & Peter Mühlhäuser - 1998 - SAGE Publications.
In this interdisciplinary examination of the discourse of environmentalism, the authors explore the linguistic, philosophical, psychological and cultural-historical aspects of environmental discourse; rather than environmental phenomena themselves. This volume is not advocacy on environmentalism, rather, it is an analysis of the means of persuasion and the techniques of advocacy used by both sides of the environmental debate between `conservationists' and `conservatives'. The book includes an analysis of the concepts of time and space in their linguistic manifestations. Another theme is the (...)
