Ce livre est un ouvrage complet sur le mouvement futuriste qui fut la première avant-garde du XXe siècle, un siècle qui aujourd'hui apparaît précisément sur le plan historique comme " le siècle des avant-gardes ". Le livre explique le rôle fondateur joué par le futurisme dans cette culture de la modernité qui, au nom de l'esprit d'avant-garde, a voulu faire de l'art un instrument de révolution sociale. Il démontre comment le futurisme s'est constitué en un " mouvement " dont les (...) représentants étaient appelés à intervenir dans tous les domaines de la création et de l'activité humaine. Il détaille la portée et la signification historique des idées et des théories futuristes, il en retrace les modes d'expression en tant que poétique d'un art de la modernité. Après en avoir explicité les éléments issus de la culture du XIXe siècle italien, en particulier du Risorgimento, il en étudie les prolongements, tant dans le domaine de l'art mécanique que dans celui de l'aéropeinture, jusqu'au début des années 40. Il analyse les différents choix de l'esthétique futuriste, sa stratégie pour créer un nouveau style de vie et sa volonté de réaliser un art total en syntonie avec le monde moderne.
