  1. Algebraization of quantifier logics, an introductory overview.István Németi - 1991 - Studia Logica 50 (3):485 - 569.
This paper is an introduction: in particular, to algebras of relations of various ranks, and in general, to the part of algebraic logic algebraizing quantifier logics. The paper has a survey character, too. The most frequently used algebras like cylindric-, relation-, polyadic-, and quasi-polyadic algebras are carefully introduced and intuitively explained for the nonspecialist. Their variants, connections with logic, abstract model theory, and further algebraic logics are also reviewed. Efforts were made to make the review part relatively comprehensive. In some (...)

  • Algebraizable Logics.W. J. Blok & Don Pigozzi - 2022 - Advanced Reasoning Forum.
    W. J. Blok and Don Pigozzi set out to try to answer the question of what it means for a logic to have algebraic semantics. In this seminal book they transformed the study of algebraic logic by giving a general framework for the study of logics by algebraic means. The Dutch mathematician W. J. Blok (1947-2003) received his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam in 1979 and was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois, Chicago until his death in (...)

  • Nonfinite axiomatizability results for cylindric and relation algebras.Roger D. Maddux - 1989 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 54 (3):951-974.
The set of equations which use only one variable and hold in all representable relation algebras cannot be derived from any finite set of equations true in all representable relation algebras. Similar results hold for cylindric algebras and for logic with finitely many variables. The main tools are a construction of nonrepresentable one-generated relation algebras, a method for obtaining cylindric algebras from relation algebras, and the use of relation algebras in defining algebraic semantics for first-order logic.

  • Quantifiers as modal operators.Steven T. Kuhn - 1980 - Studia Logica 39 (2-3):145 - 158.
Montague, Prior, von Wright and others drew attention to resemblances between modal operators and quantifiers. In this paper we show that classical quantifiers can, in fact, be regarded as S5-like operators in a purely propositional modal logic. This logic is axiomatized and some interesting fragments of it are investigated.

  • (1 other version)The modal logic of inequality.Maarten de Rijke - 1992 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 57 (2):566-584.
We consider some modal languages with a modal operator $D$ whose semantics is based on the relation of inequality. Basic logical properties such as definability, expressive power and completeness are studied. Also, some connections with a number of other recent proposals to extend the standard modal language are pointed at.

  • A Modal Logic For Quantification And Substitution.Yde Venema - 1994 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 2 (1):31-45.
The aim of this paper is to study the n-variable fragment of first order logic from a modal perspective. We define a modal formalism called cylindric mirror modal logic, and show how it is a modal version of first order logic with substitution. In this approach, we can define a semantics for the language which is closely related to algebraic logic, as we find Polyadic Equality Algebras as the modal or complex algebras of our system. The main contribution of the (...)
