  1. Abduction and Induction: Essays on Their Relation and Integration.Peter A. Flach, Antonis C. Kakas & ‎Antonis M. Hadjiantonis (eds.) - 2000 - Dordrecht, Netherland: Kluwer Academic Publishers.
From the very beginning of their investigation of human reasoning, philosophers have identified two other forms of reasoning, besides deduction, which we now call abduction and induction. Deduction is now fairly well understood, but abduction and induction have eluded a similar level of understanding. The papers collected here address the relationship between abduction and induction and their possible integration. The approach is sometimes philosophical, sometimes that of pure logic, and some papers adopt the more task-oriented approach of AI. The book (...)

  • The Generic Book.Greg N. Carlson & Francis Jeffry Pelletier (eds.) - 1995 - University of Chicago Press.
In an attempt to address the theoretical gap between linguistics and philosophy, a group of semanticists, calling itself the Generic Group, has worked to develop a common view of genericity. Their research has resulted in this book, which consists of a substantive introduction and eleven original articles on important aspects of the interpretation of generic expressions. The introduction provides a clear overview of the issues and synthesizes the major analytical approaches to them. Taken together, the papers that follow reflect the (...)

This paper discusses abductive reasoning---that is, reasoning in which explanatory hypotheses are formed and evaluated. First, it criticizes two recent formal logical models of abduction. An adequate formalization would have to take into account the following aspects of abduction: explanation is not deduction; hypotheses are layered; abduction is sometimes creative; hypotheses may be revolutionary; completeness is elusive; simplicity is complex; and abductive reasoning may be visual and non-sentential. Second, in order to illustrate visual aspects of hypothesis formation, the paper describes (...)

  • Seeking Explanations: Abduction in Logic, Philosophy of Science and Artificial Intelligence.Atocha Aliseda-Llera - 1997 - Dissertation, Stanford University
In this dissertation I study abduction, that is, reasoning from an observation to its possible explanations, from a logical point of view. This approach naturally leads to connections with theories of explanation in the philosophy of science, and to computationally oriented theories of belief change in Artificial Intelligence. ;Many different approaches to abduction can be found in the literature, as well as a bewildering variety of instances of explanatory reasoning. To delineate our subject more precisely, and create some order, a (...)
