  • Toward a Theory of Emotive Performance: With Lessons from How Politicians Do Anger.Kwai Hang Ng & Jeffrey L. Kidder - 2010 - Sociological Theory 28 (2):193 - 214.
This article treats the public display of emotion as social performance. The concept of "emotive performance" is developed to highlight the overlooked quality of performativity in the social use of emotion. We argue that emotive performance is reflexive, cultural, and communicative. As an active social act, emotive performance draws from the cultural repertoire of interpretative frameworks and dominant narratives. We illustrate the utility of the concept by analyzing two episodes of unrehearsed emotive performances by two well-known politicians, Bill Clinton and (...)

  • Drama as life: The significance of Goffman's changing use of the theatrical metaphor.Phil Manning - 1991 - Sociological Theory 9 (1):70-86.
Goffman makes considerable use of the metaphor of social life as theater. This metaphor has a significant impact on his thought in three areas: 1) it is central to his changing views about cynicism and trust in everyday life; 2) metaphor in general is a method of sociological inquiry; and 3) metaphor suggests a "limit" that his later work attempts to transcend.

  • The Sociology of the Local: Action and its Publics.Gary Alan Fine - 2010 - Sociological Theory 28 (4):355 - 376.
Sociology requires a robust theory of how local circumstances create social order. When we analyze social structures not recognizing that they depend on groups with collective pasts and futures that are spatially situated and that are based on personal relations, we avoid a core sociological dimension: the importance of local context in constituting social worlds. Too often this has been the sociological stance, both in micro-sociological studies that examine interaction as untethered from local traditions and in research that treats culture (...)

  • Possibilistic Thinking: A New Conceptual Tool for Thinking about Extreme Events.Lee Clarke - 2008 - Social Research: An International Quarterly 75:669-690.
A great deal of scholarship defines rational thought in terms of probability theory. An important problem with such an approach is that disasters, particularly large disasters, do not provide us with a meaningful distribution of events that would approximate a normal curve. Here, I propose that using possibilistic thinking can helpfully complement probabilistic thinking regarding risk and disaster. Possibilistic thinking highlights consequences of actions or events, while not ignoring their likelihood of occurrence. I point out the myriad ways that individuals (...)
