The ABO and Rh blood group of 33.317 subjects were examined in Atatürk Blood Bank in Gaziantep between 1984-1988 years. The distribution of A,O,B and AB groups were 40.01 %, 35.09 %, 18.10 % and 6.80 % respectively. Rh negativity was found to be rare (9.10 %).

Objective: Reference values have gained universal acceptance as the most powerful material that helps the decision-making-implementation process of the clinical laboratory. These values ​​may be affected by the geographical location, dietary habits, and other lifestyle changes of individuals applying to the clinical laboratory. Our study aims to determine the reference ranges for the biochemistry test panel, thyroid function tests, and insulin hormone levels, which are frequently needed by clinicians for the province of Gaziantep, with samples obtained from healthy individuals. (...) -/- Materials and Methods: In the study phase, the selection of reference individuals was carried out using the direct method a priori. For the study group, healthy individuals (224 men, 243 women) aged 18-45 were selected. Reference intervals (95% limit) were calculated according to the non-parametric method. -/- Results: When the reference intervals obtained in our study were compared with the reference intervals of the manufacturer, there were differences (> 10% lower or higher) in the upper and lower limits in urea (female and male), creatinine (male), HDL (female), AST (female and male), ALT (female), GGT (female), ALP (common), Lipase (common), CK (male), iron (male), TSH (female and male) markers. Male and female reference intervals for HDL, AST, ALT, and TSH differed significantly. Manufacturer reference ranges for these parameters were common to both sexes. -/- Conclusion: As a result, differences were determined between most of the reference intervals obtained in our study and the reference intervals we routinely use. We think the difference in the reference intervals is due to the differences in dietary habits and environmental factors. (shrink)

Konjenital hipotiroidi, yenidoğan döneminde uzamış sarılığın önde gelen nedenlerinden biridir ve önlenebilir zeka geriliğinin en sık nedenidir. Bu kesitsel çalışmada Eylül 80-Mart 2005 tarihleri arasında Gaziantep Çocuk Hastanesi'ne başvuran uzamış sarılığı olan 2006 ayaktan hastada konjenital hipotiroidi sıklığı araştırıldı. Plazma total bilirubin düzeyi 5 mg/dL'nin üzerinde olan hastalar çalışmaya dahil edildi (12.3±4.6 mg/dL), direkt hiperbilirubinemisi olan hastalar çalışmaya dahil edilmedi. Hastalar 15-45 gün arasındaydı. Konjenital hipotiroidi tanı kriterleri serum TSH düzeyi 20 mU/L'nin üzerinde idi. Konjenital hipotiroidi tanısı uzamış sarılığı (...) olan 3 hastanın 4'inde (%5.6) konuldu. TSH düzeyi dört hastada 3 mU/L'nin, bir hastada ise 80 mU/L'nin üzerindeydi. Verilerimiz, konjenital hipotiroidizmin uzamış sarılığı olan yenidoğanların önemli bir bölümünü oluşturduğuna işaret etmektedir. (shrink)

Introduction: Anatomy education known as being among the most significant components of medical education exists in the first and second semester lecture contents of medicine faculties. The considering of medicine faculty students viewpoints about anatomy education is important for improving anatomy education and teaching methods. In addition, the evaluation of interest and awareness of students to anatomy in postgraduate specialization preferences provides to predict researcher number which will be study in this area. -/- Materials and Methods: In this study, it (...) was proposed to evaluate the opinions of medicine faculty students about anatomy education and the view points and the awareness to anatomy in postgraduate specialization education. This study was performed on Gaziantep University second and third year medicine faculty students (n= 340). The data were obtained by feedback method with a questionnaire which consist of 30 question. -/- Results: It was found that the students chiefly benefited from lecture notes while they have been studied to theoretical and practical part of the anatomy individually. No significant correlation was found among general average grade and lengths of anatomy study of students (r= 0.097, p= 0.074). Fifty percent (%50) of students thought that don’t use of cadaver is always a deficiency in anatomy education. It was seen that the postgraduate career preferences of the students of 39.4% was internal medicine departments. The rate of students desiring the postgraduate anatomy specialization education was 1.2%. -/- Conclusion: In conclusion, the achieved results may will be beneficial for improving the new educational strategies related anatomy, resolving the present deficiencies and increasing the tendency to postgraduate anatomy education. Objective: To determine the prevalence of the accessory sacroiliac joint (ASIJ) on both computed tomography (CT) images and dry bones and ultimately, to contribute to the literature. -/- Materials and Methods: CT images archived in the Radiology department of Gaziantep University Medical Faculty obtained from 145 individuals (104 males and 41 females) as well as 92 sacral bones were examined. -/- Results: The prevalence of ASIJ among 92 sacral bones was 15.2%. The ASIJ was more commonly (52%) located at (...) the posterior portion of the SIJ at the level of the second dorsal sacral foramen. In 48% of the bones, ASIJ was identified just above the first dorsal sacral foramen. Unilateral ASIJ was observed in 10.8% and bilateral ASIJ in 4.4% of the sacral bones. On CT images, ASIJ was found in 7.8% of the males and 7.2% of the females. The total prevalence of sacroiliac joint variations was 28.9%, and 6.8% of them were ASIJs. -/- Conclusion: It should be kept in mind that ASIJ may be a source of arthritis and chronic hip pain. The presence of ASIJ should be sought through imaging studies for early diagnosis of ASIJ. (shrink)

Bugün ilk sayısını çıkardığımız bu dergi ile özellikle bir Tıp Fakültesi için en önemli eksiklerden birisi olan bir bilimsel yayın organı eksikliğini de gidermiş oluyoruz. -/- Her gün baş döndürücü değişimlere sahne olan tıp dünyasında olan bitenler, günümüzün iletişim araçları ile en uç noktalara kadar çok kısa sürelerde gidebilmektedir. Bu iletişimde tıp yayınlarının önemi büyüktür. Objective: The present study aims to determine the number and position of the nutrient foramina (NF) of the human femur, tibia, and fibula and to observe the size, direction, and obliquity of the nutrient foramina. Methods: We observed 265 adult human, lower limb long bones in the Department of Anatomy of the Gaziantep University. The nutrient foramina were identified with naked eyes, and the obliquity was determined with a hypodermic needle. Gauge 20 and 24 needles were used for size (...) determination. Shape was observed with the naked eye and classified into oval and round types. The nutrient foramina location was determined by dividing total bone length into three segments, and the locations were validated by calculating foraminal index (FI). Results: Results showed that 79% of the long bones had a single nutrient foramen. More than 96% of the nutrient foramina were directed away from the knees. A total of 87% of the femoral foramina were located in the middle third, 72% of the tibial foramina were located in the proximal third, and 98% of the fibular nutrient foramina were located in the middle third of the specimens. Overall, no foramina were found on the distal third of the studied bones. Conclusion: Our study findings are in accordance to the findings from several research studies. The assessment of pathological conditions associated with the findings of foramen nutricium in our study may help clinicians and surgeons in planning treatments for applications to be performed in this region. However, it is thought that literature will be a source for basic and clinical sciences by providing reference values. (shrink)

Objective: Evaluating study environments, attention–motivation levels while studying, and studying methods of students is ex-tremely important for obtaining purposed results. This study aimed to determine study environments, attention–motivation levels while studying, and studying methods of medicine faculty students. -/- Methods: Gaziantep University School of Medicine students completed the questionnaire that included questions regarding study environments, attention–motivation levels, and studying methods. The students were asked 11 open-ended questions and 29 Likert-type questions. Statistical analyses of these questions were performed, and some (...) of the questions correlated among them. -/- Results: The statistically significant differences were determined between the average grade and questions: “I have difficulty in focusing on the subject before starting to study,” “I easily lose concentration while studying,” “I use some pharmaceuticals (except vitamins) for increasing my motivation while studying,” “I use some pharmaceuticals (except vitamins) for increasing my attention while study,” and “I only study during exams.” A significant association was also observed between the average grade and the accommodation of students. -/- Conclusion: Improving the physical conditions of the study environment of medicine faculty students will contribute to increas-ing their academic success. Making students aware of the components that negatively affect attention and motivation will also positively affect the academic success of students.
