The author undertakes an attempt to answer the following question: is Christian philosophy possible today? The question seems to be of great importance due to the fact that what Christians who try to do philosophy usually encounter is bitter criticism which comes to them from two sides at once: that of academy and that of the Church. In short, for academy their philosophy is too Christian, and for the Church it is too academic. Being indebted to the insights of Étienne (...) Gilson and Mieczyslaw A. Krapiec (the original Polish spelling: Mieczysław Albert Krąpiec, pronounced: myechisuaf albert krompyetz), the author comes to the conclusion thatChristian philosophy is possible today only if: 1) it isnot identified with the art of persuasion, as its final end lies in gaining understanding rather than being convincing, 2) itis the work of a Christian, and 3) it has thereal world as its object and metaphysics as its method. ForChristian philosophy—which in essence consists indoing philosophy by Christians in order to get morerational understanding of their religious faith—shouldbe identified with theperfection of the intellect achieved by practicingthe classical philosophy of being. Mieczysław Gogacz w swojej filozofii podkreślał naczelną rolę rozważań metafizycznych po to, aby uczynić z filozofii dziedzinę adekwatną do analizowanej rzeczywistości. Metodologię metafizyki wyznacza spotkany, realnie istniejący byt jednostkowy. To nie zastosowana metoda wywołuje w ludzkim intelekcie skutki, które są wyrażane i porządkowane. To raczej byt składający się z istnienia i istoty, wywołuje w intelekcie „mowę serca”, a więc rozumienia, którymi człowiek ponownie zwraca się do rzeczywistości, by lepiej ją uchwycić. O ile przedmiot wyznacza metodę metafizyki, o tyle zachodzi (...) właściwa relacja poznawania nazywana „mową serca”, która w dalszej kolejności umożliwia tworzenie adekwatnej wiedzy o pryncypiach stanowiących byt. Tylko metafizyka skoncentrowana na ujmowaniu i prezentowaniu istnienia bytu może stać się sposobem obrony realizmu w filozofii. (shrink)

The article considers one of the most significant concepts in Aristotelian philosophy: the concept of substance and its interpretation in the works of existential Thomists. The emphasis is placed on the fact that the doctrine of substance is first and foremost to be considered in the context of the identification of the subject of scientific knowledge and in the context of the way of knowing this subject. In order to illustrate the epistemological realism, which, according to Thomists, inheres in Aristotle’s (...) philosophy the article analyzes the previous philosophers’ views on the true subject of scientific knowledge. This subject is individual being, which forms the basis of philosophical understanding of things, as a subject of scientific knowledge. It should be noted that the method of constructing of Aristotle’s science general theory is finding reasons why something is just what it is from the viewpoint of necessity. Krąpiec believes that the way Aristotle comes to the formation of the four causes is related to the specificity of the question διὰ τί (why? because of what?). This analysis through causes allows us to understand that each single entity has a composite structure. Furthermore, Aristotle considers substance as a logical and grammatical category and as a main category in the ontological sense, as the mode of the initial being of things. Therefore, categories reflect the actual structure of things, namely the way of its existence on the essential and accidental levels. The very substance itself is recognizable only through the accidents associated with it and represents itself through them. However, the substance precedes its accidents in three meanings: ontological, definitive, and epistemological. (shrink)
