Współczesny świat, zdominowany przez elektroniczne środki przekazu, to już zupełnie inne pojmowanie komunikacji językowej, zarówno tej w formie pisanej, jak i mówionej. Dominują w nim skrótowe i kompaktowe wypowiedzi; język z jednej strony traci na znaczeniu, z drugiej zaś - chłonie nowinki z innych systemów językowych, z którymi wchodzi w interakcje na różnych płaszczyznach. Niewątpliwe ogromną rolę odgrywają w tym procesie różnice kulturowe i związane z tym nie tylko kwestie mentalności, stereotypy, lecz także odmienne pojmowanie zjawisk dnia codziennego, w tym (...) również sposób definiowania poczucia humoru. Ciekawą rzeczą jest więc próba wskazania na podobieństwa oraz różnice między tzw. „typowo niemieckim” poczuciem humoru a niemieckim programem komediowym Was guckst du?, produkowanym i prowadzonym przez obcokrajowca. Kaya Yanar, autor i gospodarz tego programu, jest niewątpliwie najlepszym przykładem na to, że wymienione wcześniej „typowo niemieckie” poczucie humoru odbiega w znacznym stopniu od rodzaju żartu, proponowanego właśnie przez Yanara. Was guckst du? daje możliwość zanalizowania języka audycji komediowej, odwołującej się głównie do kultury świata arabskiego i wszelkich zjawisk z nią związanych, kwestii opanowania i posługiwania się językiem niemieckim właśnie przez obcokrajowców z tego kręgu kulturowego. W przełożeniu na leksykę i jej użycie w praktyce oznacza to wykorzystanie w programie zjawiska wieloznaczności, wynikających z braku znajomości języka, jako źródła sytuacji komediowych, które w połączeniu z niezwykle barwną osobą prowadzącego, odpowiednim obrazem, charakterem postaci oraz motywami muzycznymi, jest punktem wyjścia do całościowej analizy tegoż programu. This article aims to develop a Lacanian approach to bioethics. Point of departure is the fact that both psychoanalysis and bioethics are practices of language, combining diagnostics with therapy. Subsequently, I will point out how Lacanian linguistics may help us to elucidate the dynamics of both psychoanalytical and bioethical discourse, using the movie One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone as key examples. Next, I will explain the ‘topology’ of the bioethical landscape with the help of Lacan’s (...) three dimensions: the imaginary, the symbolical and the real. This will culminate in an assessment of the dynamics of bioethical discourse with the help of Lacan’s theorem of the four discourses. Bioethics, I will argue, is not a homogeneous discourse. Rather, four modalities of bioethical discourse can be distinguished, all of them displaying specific weaknesses and strengths, opportunities and threats. This will be elucidated with the help of two case studies, namely the debates on human reproductive technologies and on the use of animals as biomedical research models. (shrink)

The matter under consideration in this article is the ethnic joke as a primary element of the German TV comedy “Was guckst du?”. The starting point is a short overview of the ethnic joke and the extralingual phenomena that are associated with such jokes, and – above all – pointing at the function of stereotypes as causes for jokes about individual nations. Texts of jokes concerning individual nations were used to illustrate the reviewed problems. Przedmiotem rozważań tego artykułu jest rola zjawisk wieloznaczności oraz homofonii jako środków wyrazu, stosowanych w tekstach humorystycznych. Również kwestia zastosowania konkretnej leksyki obcego pochodzenia, brak znajomości jej znaczenia, wskazanie na brakującą wiedzę z zakresu danego słownictwa fachowego, w tym przypadku z dziedziny informatyki, staje się punktem wyjścia do stworzenia krótkich zabawnych form scenicznych. Znalezione i określone w trakcie przeprowadzonej analizy źródła komizmu, ewidentnie związane z życiem codziennym i słownictwem z różnych zakresów, odzwierciedlają zarówno językowe, jak i pozajęzykowe możliwości tworzenia zabawnych (...) tekstów, jakimi niewątpliwie są omówione w tym artykule skecze. Freud schätzte Humor als eine der höchsten psychischen Leistungen und lieferte wegweisende Beiträge zu seinem theoretischen Verständnis, unterließ es jedoch, aus seinen Überlegungen Schlüsse für die psychoanalytische Praxis zu ziehen. Der Beitrag unterbreitet einen Vorschlag, wie sich der Platz von Humor in der psychoanalytischen Behandlungstechnik genauer bestimmen lässt. Dazu wird der Zusammenhang von Humor und psychodynamischer Einsicht herausgearbeitet. Eine bestimmte Form von Humor erweist sich dabei nicht etwa als eine mögliche Zugabe, sondern vielmehr als ein konstitutiver Bestandteil jenes ernsten Unternehmens, (...) das die Psychoanalyse ist. Der Aufsatz entwickelt eine Charakterisierung dieses spezifisch psychodynamischen Humors und zeigt dabei, wie Humor als eine Weise ungesättigten Deutens dazu genutzt werden kann, spielerisch mit dem Ernst der Übertragung umzugehen. In this article an attempt is made to discuss the German joke regarding its assignment to the class of bad jokes in German. The question of what is a pun and what determines that a humorous text can be classified as bad or good is also important and very interesting. No less important are questions about the possibility of breaking all rules and norms, both of linguistic and social natures. These considerations are documented by examples of German jokes; on the (...) one hand Loriot’s texts, texts from “Was guckst du?” and on the other from websites. The question of whether an analysed joke is good or bad still remains open despite all possible classification attempts, because its interpretation is subjective, to be assessed for what it is by the recipient from the outset. Witze über Eigennamen sind eine heikle Angelegenheit. Der folgende Artikel interpretiert ein solches Sprachspiel mit dem Namen »Isabel«, das sich in Baltasar Graciáns Abhandlung über den Witz findet (»Agudeza y arte de ingenio«, 1648). Durch die Zusammenführung von Graciáns Gedicht und seinem Kommentar mit Sigmund Freuds Überlegungen zu Witzen und ihrer Beziehung zum Unbewussten (»Der Witz und seine Beziehung zum Unbewussten«, 1905) zeigt die Autorin, dass es nicht nur Parallelen in diesen jeweiligen Theorien gibt, sondern dass sie auch helfen, den (...) Witz mit dem Namen Isabel zu verstehen. Mit Freuds Ausführungen zu Zoten legt der Artikel damit die bisher übersehene aggressive Seite dieses Witzes frei. (shrink)

Can scientific evidence prompt us to revise philosophical theories or folk theoretical accounts of phenomena of the mind? We will argue that it can—but only under the condition that they make a so-called ‘ontological commitment’ to something that is actually subject to empirical inquiry. In other words, scientific evidence pertaining to neuroanatomical structure or causal processes only has a refuting effect if philosophical theories and folk notions subscribe to either account. We will illustrate the importance of ‘ontological commitment’ with the (...) ‘neuroanatomical approach’ to amusement as proposed in a recent paper by Palencik :419–434, 2007). We will show that the scientific evidence presented in said neuroanatomical approach has no bearing on the conceptual issues, in that the philosophical theories and folk distinction that are criticized do not subscribe to any account of the underlying neuroanatomical structure or causal processes. Our suggestions in this paper are not limited to philosophical accounts of humor but apply to the relationship of philosophy, common sense and science in general. (shrink)

Psychoanalysis sets out to solve the riddles and enigmas of the psyche. For Adorno, however, psychoanalysis itself is an enigma. Why, he asks, have both the theory and its therapeutic applications become entangled in insoluble contradictions? Adorno identifies to a certain extent with the great psychoanalytic riddle-solvers, Freud and Ferenczi, as he probes these contradictions. He hopes, however, to move beyond the limits of a theory that reduces all phenomena to psychological factors, so he also approaches the problem as a (...) sociologist. This perspective enables him to describe the static and dynamic aspects of the social structure within which psychoanalysis developed in the first half of the 20th century. And it frees him, furthermore, from the misconception that Freud passed on to most of his followers: the belief that they were pursuing a natural science of the soul, which would generate its own rigorously scientific psychological technique. There seems to be no connection between philosophy of humor and the philosophy of technology. In this paper, I want to make the case that there is. I will pursue a twofold goal in this paper: First, I will take an account from one of the seminal figures in the philosophy of humor, Henri Bergson, and bring out its merits for a philosophy of technology. Bergson has never been fully appreciated as a philosopher of technology. I will fill this gap (...) and show that Bergson’s account of the comic contains some interesting insights about our relation to technology. Second, I will show that humor and the comic open up a new perspective on technology that may facilitate new ways of thinking about our technological culture. (shrink)

It is perhaps time to revivify our other name in Greek: phos. For although the Greeks named us anthrôpos, they also called us phos. And the Greeks used the word phos because we are like light. Indeed, our way of being light-like is illuminating, which illuminates being and the truth of being, so that it can be thought and said, imagined, and sensed—especially insofar as we are this illumination. Thus, it is time to reclaim phos as our name and so (...) rethink what it means to illuminate, whether we light up everything that is, as well as ourselves, or not. (shrink)

Die »Entstellung« wird als Grundbegriff der Freud’schen Psychoanalyse dargestellt, der eine doppelte, ja gegensätzliche Bedeutung hat: Sie erscheint dem Bewusstsein als Verunstaltung oder Verfälschung, ist aber zugleich die spezifische Erscheinungsweise des Unbewussten. Der Artikel zeichnet nach, welche Bedeutung Freud der Entstellung für die Traumdeutung beimisst. Anschließend wird dargelegt, dass die zentralen Begriffe der Psychoanalyse (das Unbewusste, die Übertragung, der Trieb, die Wiederholung) aus einer Bewegung der Entstellung hervorgehen. Schließlich werden die psychoanalytische Grundregel und die ihr zugeordneten Begriffe der »freien Assoziation« (...) bzw. »gleichschwebenden Aufmerksamkeit« als ein technisches Verfahren vorgestellt, das wesentlich auf die Entdeckung und Analyse »entstellter Objekte« (Laplanche & Pontalis) ausgerichtet ist. Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism contains a disquieting and devastating diagnosis about our world. This paper aims to discuss the political- philosophical assumptions underlying the crisis identified by Arendt in her work. It will center its attention on Arendt’s book on Imperialism and her view of the nation- state. An indirect and genetic comprehension path will be drawn, starting with the Arendtian criticism regarding the human rights concept in effect to date, in a kind of prolegomenon both to Arendt’s (...) assessment of Human Rights and to her own proposal of a human right. It will be contended that the individual was freed from his humanness viewed as a universal way of being by way of the nation-state and the Imperialism that followed it. It will be shown that, as a result of this emancipatory movement, the positivity of right was abrogated, simultaneously abrogating the individual’s bond to the human community, thus constituting humanness as a problem.
