Axel Honneth draws a distinction between three types of recognition: (1) love, (2) respect and (3) social esteem. In his The Struggle for Recognition, the recognition of cultural particularity is situated in the third sphere. It will here be argued that the logic of recognition of cultural identity also demands a non-evaluative recognition, namely a respect for difference. Difference-respect is formal because it is a recognition of the value of a particular culture not "for society" or "as such", but for (...) the social group involved. Yet, although it is formal, difference-respect cannot be reduced to respect for personal autonomy and its preconditions, as Honneth wrongly suggests in Redistribution or Recognition? It is argued here that difference-respect is oriented towards another dimension of the person, namely social attachments. This kind of respect entails a separate register of formal recognition with a corresponding concept of personal identity and a parallel category of social disrespect. What morally justifies difference-respect from a recognition-theoretic approach is the practical relation-to-self that thus becomes possible, namely self-respect as a sense of belonging. The formal conception of the good life that Honneth articulates should include the insight that this sense of belonging is as much a necessary condition for the good life as is personal autonomy. У статті проаналізовано сучасні філософські дискурси реальних механізмів, способів взаємозв’язку ідентичності та визнання в контексті «усвідомлення несправедливості», «патологій» суспільного буття. А також показано, що, на відміну від переважно монологічних ідей визнання П. Рікера, Ч. Тейлора та «комунікативної утопії» Ю. Габермаса, Т. Ренч і А. Гонет пропонують його інтерсуб’єк-тивний, реалістичний концепт. Важливою ознакою останнього стало розширення «перспективи справедливості», подолання її звуженого варіанту через звернення до «іншого справедливості», до визнання та турботи. Таким чином, А. Гонет пропонує доповнити моральний принцип однакового ставлення до (...) людей нормою конкретного обов’язку щодо окремої людини, яка потребує допомоги. Підсумовуючи осмислення проблеми визнання в сучасній філософії, автор наголошує на значенні створення А. Гонетом теорії визнання в річищі теорії свободи і справедливості. Відомий німецький мислитель у такий спосіб прагне реабілітувати основні настанови соціальної філософії Франкфуртської школи з метою пошуків адекватних шляхів подолання розмаїтих проявів соціальної несправедливості, приниження, зневаги людської гідності. І має це відбуватися на засадах осягнення внутрішнього потенціалу самого феномена визнання як принципово важливої (насамперед для вітчизняного простору) можливості узгодження формально-легітимних інституційних його структур зі справжнім визнанням їх як справедливих. З метою перетворення свого бачення визнання з «комунікативної утопії» на дієвий соціальний проект А. Гонет намагається переомислити ідеї Дж. Ролза, Н. Фрейзер, доповнити етику дискурсу розлогою теорією визнання та етикою турботи. (shrink)

This article contributes to the emerging discussion on responsible leadership by providing an analysis of the inner theatre of a responsible leader. I use a narrative approach for analyzing the biography of Anita Roddick as a widely acknowledged prototype of a responsible leader. With clinical and normative lenses I explore the relationship between responsible leadership behavior and the underlying motivational systems. I begin the article with an introduction outlining the current state of responsible leadership research and explaining the kind of (...) magnifying glasses used to examine the case. I continue with a brief summary of Anita Roddick’s development from childhood to adulthood, which provides the biographical background for exploring her motivational systems as a leader. Against this backdrop, I analyze the relationship between motivational drivers and a responsible leadership identity as revealed by Roddick in different behavioral leadership roles. I conclude the article by providing a number of lessons learned for responsible leadership and the development of future global leaders. (shrink)

In light of grand societal challenges, most recently the global Covid-19 pandemic, there is a call for research on responsible leadership. While significant advances have been made in recent years towards a better understanding of the concept, a gap exists in the understanding of responsible leadership in emerging countries, specifically how leaders resolve prevalent moral dilemmas. Following Werhane, we use moral imagination as an analytical approach to analyze a dilemmatic stakeholder conflict through the lense of different responsible leadership mindsets and (...) in light of different ethical principles and moral background theories. Based on this analysis, we arrive at a tentative moral judgement, concluding that the instrumental approach is morally inferior and recommending the integrative approach as the morally superior choice. In the subsequent discussion—focussed on what “could” be done, we apply the integrative script and use moral imagination as a pathway for generating morally justifiable solutions. Through this analysis, we provide novel insights on how to apply an integrative responsible leadership approach to a stakeholder conflict situation, using the single case study to expand the responsible leadership discussion to emerging markets. Normative political philosophy always refers to a standard against which a society's institutions are judged. In the first, analytical part of the article, the different possible forms of normative criticism are examined according to whether the standards it appeals to are external or internal to the society in question. In the tradition of Socrates and Hegel, it is argued that reconstructing the kind of norms that are implicit in practices enables a critique that does not force the critic's particular views (...) on the addressee and can also be motivationally effective. In the second part of the article, Axel Honneth's theory of recognition is examined as a form of such reconstructive internal critique . It is argued that while the implicit norms of recognition made explicit in Honneth's philosophical anthropology help explain progressive social struggles as moral ones, his theory faces two challenges in justifying internal critique. The Priority Challenge asks for the reasons why the implicit norms of recognition should be taken as the standard against which other implicit and explicit norms are to be judged. The Application Challenge asks why a social group should, by its own lights, extend equal recognition to all its members and even non-members. The kind of functional, prudential, conceptual, and moral considerations that could serve to answer these challenges are sketched. (shrink)

In den neueren Forschungen zur marxschen Werttheorie wird einhellig und mit besonderem Nachdruck darauf hingewiesen, dass abstrakte Arbeit eine gesellschaftliche Eigenschaft der Arbeitsprodukte ist. Häufi g verstehen die Autoren unter dem mehrdeutigen Adjektiv jedoch Verschiedenes. Im folgenden Beitrag zeige ich, dass schon Marx zu unterscheidende Sachverhalte im Sinn hatte, als er die gesellschaftliche Dimension der Wertsubstanz hervorhob: ihren Bezug zur gesellschaftlich notwendigen Durchschnittsarbeitszeit, ihren Bezug zum gesellschaftlichen Bedarf und die Geschichtlichkeit der warenproduzierenden Gesellschaft. Ich denke, wir müssen auf der Linie (...) von Marx einen Schritt weiterdenken. Die Hauptthese des Beitrags ist, dass die marxsche Werttheorie an Überzeugungskraft gewinnt, sobald den drei Bedeutungen des Adjektivs gesellschaftlich eine weitere zur Seite gestellt wird: die gesellschaftliche Wertschätzung. Inwiefern sich diese These durch anderweitige anerkennungstheoretische Überlegungen im Kapital untermauern lässt, wird abschließend diskutiert. (shrink)
