  • Brouwer's fan theorem and unique existence in constructive analysis.Josef Berger & Hajime Ishihara - 2005 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 51 (4):360-364.
Many existence propositions in constructive analysis are implied by the lesser limited principle of omniscience LLPO; sometimes one can even show equivalence. It was discovered recently that some existence propositions are equivalent to Bouwer's fan theorem FAN if one additionally assumes that there exists at most one object with the desired property. We are providing a list of conditions being equivalent to FAN, such as a unique version of weak König's lemma. This illuminates the relation between FAN and LLPO. Furthermore, (...)

In this paper we analyse in the framework of constructive mathematics (BISH) the validity of Farkas' lemma and related propositions, namely the Fredholm alternative for solvability of systems of linear equations, optimality criteria in linear programming, Stiemke's lemma and the Superhedging Duality from mathematical finance, and von Neumann's minimax theorem with application to constructive game theory.

  • Toward a Clarity of the Extreme Value Theorem.Karin U. Katz, Mikhail G. Katz & Taras Kudryk - 2014 - Logica Universalis 8 (2):193-214.
We apply a framework developed by C. S. Peirce to analyze the concept of clarity, so as to examine a pair of rival mathematical approaches to a typical result in analysis. Namely, we compare an intuitionist and an infinitesimal approaches to the extreme value theorem. We argue that a given pre-mathematical phenomenon may have several aspects that are not necessarily captured by a single formalisation, pointing to a complementarity rather than a rivalry of the approaches.

  • Unique solutions.Peter Schuster - 2006 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 52 (6):534-539.
It is folklore that if a continuous function on a complete metric space has approximate roots and in a uniform manner at most one root, then it actually has a root, which of course is uniquely determined. Also in Bishop's constructive mathematics with countable choice, the general setting of the present note, there is a simple method to validate this heuristic principle. The unique solution even becomes a continuous function in the parameters by a mild modification of the uniqueness hypothesis. (...)

  • Borel complexity and computability of the Hahn–Banach Theorem.Vasco Brattka - 2008 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 46 (7-8):547-564.
The classical Hahn–Banach Theorem states that any linear bounded functional defined on a linear subspace of a normed space admits a norm-preserving linear bounded extension to the whole space. The constructive and computational content of this theorem has been studied by Bishop, Bridges, Metakides, Nerode, Shore, Kalantari Downey, Ishihara and others and it is known that the theorem does not admit a general computable version. We prove a new computable version of this theorem without unrolling the classical proof of the (...)

  • Lifschitz realizability for intuitionistic Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory.Ray-Ming Chen & Michael Rathjen - 2012 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 51 (7-8):789-818.
A variant of realizability for Heyting arithmetic which validates Church’s thesis with uniqueness condition, but not the general form of Church’s thesis, was introduced by Lifschitz (Proc Am Math Soc 73:101–106, 1979). A Lifschitz counterpart to Kleene’s realizability for functions (in Baire space) was developed by van Oosten (J Symb Log 55:805–821, 1990). In that paper he also extended Lifschitz’ realizability to second order arithmetic. The objective here is to extend it to full intuitionistic Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory, IZF. The machinery (...)

  • Effective choice and boundedness principles in computable analysis.Vasco Brattka & Guido Gherardi - 2011 - Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 17 (1):73-117.
In this paper we study a new approach to classify mathematical theorems according to their computational content. Basically, we are asking the question which theorems can be continuously or computably transferred into each other? For this purpose theorems are considered via their realizers which are operations with certain input and output data. The technical tool to express continuous or computable relations between such operations is Weihrauch reducibility and the partially ordered degree structure induced by it. We have identified certain choice (...)

  • Continuous isomorphisms from R onto a complete abelian group.Douglas Bridges & Matthew Hendtlass - 2010 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 75 (3):930-944.
This paper provides a Bishop-style constructive analysis of the contrapositive of the statement that a continuous homomorphism of R onto a compact abelian group is periodic. It is shown that, subject to a weak locatedness hypothesis, if G is a complete (metric) abelian group that is the range of a continuous isomorphism from R, then G is noncompact. A special case occurs when G satisfies a certain local path-connectedness condition at 0. A number of results about one-one and injective mappings (...)

  • The Fan Theorem, its strong negation, and the determinacy of games.Wim Veldman - forthcoming - Archive for Mathematical Logic:1-66.
In the context of a weak formal theory called Basic Intuitionistic Mathematics $$\textsf{BIM}$$ BIM, we study Brouwer’s Fan Theorem and a strong negation of the Fan Theorem, Kleene’s Alternative (to the Fan Theorem). We prove that the Fan Theorem is equivalent to contrapositions of a number of intuitionistically accepted axioms of countable choice and that Kleene’s Alternative is equivalent to strong negations of these statements. We discuss finite and infinite games and introduce a constructively useful notion of determinacy. We prove (...)

We study the lattice of local operators in Hylandʼs Effective Topos. We show that this lattice is a free completion under internal sups indexed by the natural numbers object, generated by what we call basic local operators. We produce many new local operators and we employ a new concept, sight, in order to analyze these. We show that a local operator identified by A.M. Pitts in his thesis, gives a subtopos with classical arithmetic.
