  1. Children's Strategy Choices on Complex Subtraction Problems: Individual Differences and Developmental Changes.Sara Caviola, Irene C. Mammarella, Massimiliano Pastore & Jo-Anne LeFevre - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:377863.
We examined how children's strategy choices in solving complex subtraction problems are related to grade and to variations in problem complexity. In two studies, third- and fifth-grade children (N≈160 each study) solved multi-digit subtraction problems (e.g., 34–18) and described their solution strategies. In the first experiment, strategy selection was investigated by means of a free-choice paradigm, whereas in the second study a discrete-choice approach was implemented. In both experiments, analyses of strategy repertoire indicated that third-grade children were more likely to (...)

  • Contribution of working memory in multiplication fact network in children may shift from verbal to visuo-spatial: a longitudinal investigation.Mojtaba Soltanlou, Silvia Pixner & Hans-Christoph Nuerk - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:129410.
Number facts are commonly assumed to be verbally stored in an associative multiplication fact retrieval network. Prominent evidence for this assumption comes from so-called operand-related errors (e.g. 4 × 6 = 28). However, little is known about the development of this network in children and its relation to verbal and non-verbal memories. In a longitudinal design, we explored elementary school children from grades 3 and 4 in a multiplication verification task with the operand-related and -unrelated distractors. We examined the contribution (...)

  • Strategies in sentential reasoning.Jean-Baptiste Van Der Henst, Yingrui Yang & Johnson-Laird N. Philip - 2002 - Cognitive Science 26 (4):425-468.
Four experiments examined the strategies that individuals develop in sentential reasoning. They led to the discovery of five different strategies. According to the theory proposed in the paper, each of the strategies depends on component tactics, which all normal adults possess, and which are based on mental models. Reasoners vary their use of tactics in ways that are not deterministic. This variation leads different individuals to assemble different strategies, which include the construction of incremental diagram corresponding to mental models, and (...)

  • Turning Potential Flexibility Into Flexible Performance: Moderating Effect of Self-Efficacy and Use of Flexible Cognition.Ru-De Liu, Jia Wang, Jon R. Star, Rui Zhen, Rong-Huan Jiang & Xin-Chen Fu - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:354424.
This study examined the relationship between two types of mathematical flexibility – potential flexibility, which indicates individuals’ knowledge of multiple strategies and strategy efficiency, and practical flexibility, which refers to individuals’ flexible performances when solving math problems. Both types of flexibility were assessed in the domain of linear equation solving. Furthermore, two types of beliefs – self-efficacy and use of flexible cognition – were investigated as potential moderators between potential and practical flexibility. 121 8th grade students from China took part (...)

  • Training Can Increase Students’ Choices for Written Solution Strategies and Performance in Solving Multi-Digit Division Problems.Marije F. Fagginger Auer, Marian Hickendorff & Cornelis M. Van Putten - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:365337.
Making adaptive choices between solution strategies is a central element of contemporary mathematics education. However, previous studies signal that students make suboptimal choices between mental and written strategies to solve division problems. In particular, some students of a lower math ability level appear inclined to use mental strategies that lead to lower performance. The current study uses a pretest-training-posttest design to investigate the extent to which these students’ choices for written strategies and performance may be increased. Sixth graders of below-average (...)

  • Who uses more strategies? Linking mathematics anxiety to adults’ strategy variability and performance on fraction magnitude tasks.Pooja G. Sidney, Rajaa Thalluri, Morgan L. Buerke & Clarissa A. Thompson - 2018 - Thinking and Reasoning 25 (1):94-131.
ABSTRACTAdults use a variety of strategies to reason about fraction magnitudes, and this variability is adaptive. In two studies, we examined the relationships between mathematics anxiety, working memory, strategy variability and performance on two fraction tasks: fraction magnitude comparison and estimation. Adults with higher mathematics anxiety had lower accuracy on the comparison task and greater percentage absolute error on the estimation task. Unexpectedly, mathematics anxiety was not related to variable strategy use. However, variable strategy use was linked to more accurate (...)

  • Some Correct Strategies Are Better Than Others: Individual Differences in Strategy Evaluations Are Related to Strategy Adoption.David Menendez, Sarah A. Brown & Martha W. Alibali - 2023 - Cognitive Science 47 (3):e13269.
Why do people shift their strategies for solving problems? Past work has focused on the roles of contextual and individual factors in explaining whether people adopt new strategies when they are exposed to them. In this study, we examined a factor not considered in prior work: people's evaluations of the strategies themselves. We presented undergraduate participants from a moderately selective university (N = 252; 64.8% women, 65.6% White, 67.6% who had taken calculus) with two strategies for solving algebraic word problems (...)
