  • Epistemic Virtues in Business.Boudewijn de Bruin - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 113 (4):583-595.
    This paper applies emerging research on epistemic virtues to business ethics. Inspired by recent work on epistemic virtues in philosophy, I develop a view in which epistemic virtues contribute to the acquisition of knowledge that is instrumentally valuable in the realisation of particular ends, business ends in particular. I propose a conception of inquiry according to which epistemic actions involve investigation, belief adoption and justification, and relate this to the traditional ‘justified true belief’ analysis of knowledge.   • Can Illness Be Edifying?Ian James Kidd - 2012 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 55 (5):496-520.
    Abstract Havi Carel has recently argued that one can be ill and happy. An ill person can ?positively respond? to illness by cultivating ?adaptability? and ?creativity?. I propose that Carel's claim can be augmented by connecting it with virtue ethics. The positive responses which Carel describes are best understood as the cultivation of virtues, and this adds a significant moral aspect to coping with illness.     Virtues commonly associated with physicians and other healthcare professionals include empathy, respect, kindness, compassion, trustworthiness, and many more. Building upon the work of Bortolloti, Murphy-Hollies, and others, I suggest that curiosity as a virtue has an integral role to play in healthcare, namely, in helping to make those who are invisible, visible.     Susan Sherwin's approach to bioethics promotes more inclusive and less oppressive sociopolitical environments within healthcare for marginalized groups. Sherwin's relational theory of autonomy endorses this aim in targeting live options as bellwethers for recognizing contexts constraining or promoting autonomy. Those contexts closing off certain options as pursuable in practice limit autonomy while those promoting a plurality of practically pursuable courses of action are autonomy enhancing.
