This book traces the development of formal logic from its origins inancient Greece to the present day. The authors first discuss the work oflogicians from Aristotle to Frege, showing how they were influenced by thephilosophical or mathematical ideas of their time. They then examinedevelopments in the present century.

We argue that the extant evidence for Stoic logic provides all the elements required for a variable-free theory of multiple generality, including a number of remarkably modern features that straddle logic and semantics, such as the understanding of one- and two-place predicates as functions, the canonical formulation of universals as quantified conditionals, a straightforward relation between elements of propositional and first-order logic, and the roles of anaphora and rigid order in the regimented sentences that express multiply general propositions. We consider (...) and reinterpret some ancient texts that have been neglected in the context of Stoic universal and existential propositions and offer new explanations of some puzzling features in Stoic logic. Our results confirm that Stoic logic surpasses Aristotle’s with regard to multiple generality, and are a reminder that focusing on multiple generality through the lens of Frege-inspired variable-binding quantifier theory may hamper our understanding and appreciation of pre-Fregean theories of multiple generality. Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) und Ludwig Wittgenstein gelten als die geistigen Väter der analytischen Philosophie. Das wissenschaftliche Schaffen Gottlob Freges hat wie kein anderes nach Aristoteles die Logik in ihrer theoretischen Erscheinungsform und in ihrer praktischen Relevanz grundlegend verändert. Seine logisch-semantischen Untersuchungen haben noch immer auf Philosophie und Sprachwissenschaft großen Einfluß. Doch wer war dieser Mann, der die Geistesgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts mitgestaltete, dessen Rückführung logischen Schließens auf mechanisch kontrollierte Elementarschritte den Weg zur Logik der elektronischen Datenverarbeitung eröffnete? Zwar gibt es (...) Arbeiten, die sich mit besonderen Seiten oder speziellen Zeiten von Freges Leben beschäftigen, eine umfassende Biographie über ihn gab es jedoch bislang nicht. Diese Lücke schließt Lothar Kreisers Buch. Freges Leben wird biographisch zunächst in dem Kontext der Stadt und Stadtschule Wismar, dann in dem der Stadt und der Universität Jena eingebettet rekonstruiert. Regional übergreifende politische und wissenschaftliche Vorgänge werden einbezogen, um verbürgten konkreten Ereignissen aus Freges Leben einen für das Verstehen tieferen und festeren Rahmen zu geben. Seine Mitwirkung in Kommisionen und Gesellschaften kommt ebenso zur Sprache wie die Wurzeln seines wissenschaftlichen Lebenswerkes, seine Beziehungen zu anderen Persönlichkeiten und deren Bestrebungen, aber auch der Wandel in seinen politischen Überzeugungen. Die Biographie setzt keine speziellen Fachkenntnisse, nur Interesse an einem spannenden Abschnitt der Wissenschaftsgeschichte, fokussiert auf die Person Gottlob Frege, voraus. Thomas Ricketts has developed a powerful interpretation of Frege on judgment, truth and logic. Recently, Ricketts has modified his reading, holding that judgment is an act of knowledge-acquisition; this rules out incorrect judgment. I argue that Ricketts goes too far here. I criticize the textual basis for Ricketts's new view, and show that the interpretive problems which led him to this change can be met without such extreme measures. Thus, I defend Ricketts' earlier view against his own later modification. Along (...) the way I discuss Kant and Brentano on judgment, and I explore Fregean argument concerning the objectivity of truth. (shrink)

Self-taught mathematician and father of Boolean algebra, George Boole (1815-1864) published An Investigation of the Laws of Thought in 1854. In this highly original investigation of the fundamental laws of human reasoning, a sequel to ideas he had explored in earlier writings, Boole uses the symbolic language of mathematics to establish a method to examine the nature of the human mind using logic and the theory of probabilities. Boole considers language not just as a mode of expression, but as a (...) system one can use to understand the human mind. In the first 12 chapters, he sets down the rules necessary to represent logic in this unique way. Then he analyses a variety of arguments and propositions of various writers from Aristotle to Spinoza. One of history's most insightful mathematicians, Boole is compelling reading for today's student of intellectual history and the science of the mind. (shrink)

Intellectualists tell us that a person who knows how to do something therein knows a proposition. Along with others, they may say that a person who intends to do something intends a proposition. I argue against them. I do so by way of considering ‘know how ——’ and ‘intend ——’ together. When the two are considered together, a realistic conception of human agency can inform the understanding of some infinitives: the argument need not turn on what semanticists have had to (...) say about ‘the subjects of infinitival clauses’.
