  1. Substructural Logics.Peter Joseph Schroeder-Heister & Kosta Došen - 1993 - Oxford, England: Oxford University Press on Demand.
The new area of logic and computation is now undergoing rapid development. This has affected the social pattern of research in the area. A new topic may rise very quickly with a significant body of research around it. The community, however, cannot wait the traditional two years for a book to appear. This has given greater importance to thematic collections of papers, centred around a topic and addressing it from several points of view, usually as a result of a workshop, (...)

  • Handbook of Logic and Language.J. F. A. K. Van Benthem, Johan van Benthem & Alice G. B. Ter Meulen (eds.) - 1997 - Elsevier.
This Handbook documents the main trends in current research between logic and language, including its broader influence in computer science, linguistic theory and cognitive science. The history of the combined study of Logic and Linguistics goes back a long way, at least to the work of the scholastic philosophers in the Middle Ages. At the beginning of this century, the subject was revitalized through the pioneering efforts of Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, and Polish philosophical logicians such as Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. Around (...)

We prove that the Lambek calculus is complete w.r.t. L-models, i.e., free semigroup models. We also prove the completeness w.r.t. relativized relational models over the natural linear order of integers.

  • Sequent systems for compact bilinear logic.Wojciech Buszkowski - 2003 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 49 (5):467.
Compact Bilinear Logic , introduced by Lambek [14], arises from the multiplicative fragment of Noncommutative Linear Logic of Abrusci [1] by identifying times with par and 0 with 1. In this paper, we present two sequent systems for CBL and prove the cut-elimination theorem for them. We also discuss a connection between cut-elimination for CBL and the Switching Lemma from [14].

  • Normal form of derivations in the nonassociative and commutative lambek calculus with product.Maciej Kandulski - 1993 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 39 (1):103-114.
We show that derivations in the nonassociative and commutative Lambek calculus with product can be transformed to a normal form as it is the case with derivations in noncommutative calculi. As an application we obtain that the class of languages generated by categorial grammars based on the nonassociative and commutative Lambek calculus with product is included in the class of CF-languages. • On the logic of β -pregroups.Aleksandra Kiślak-Malinowska - 2007 - Studia Logica 87 (2-3):323 - 342.
In this paper we concentrate mainly on the notion of β-pregroups, which are pregroups (first introduced by Lambek [18] in 1999) enriched with modality operators. β-pregroups were first proposed by Fadda [11] in 2001. The motivation to introduce them was to limit (locally) the associativity in the calculus considered. In this paper we present this new calculus in the form of a rewriting system, prove the very important feature of this system - that in a given derivation the non- expanding (...)

Some formal properties of enriched systems of Lambek calculus with analogues of conjunction and disjunction are investigated. In particular, it is proved that the class of languages recognizable by the Lambek calculus with added intersective conjunction properly includes the class of finite intersections of context-free languages.

  • From semirings to residuated Kleene lattices.Peter Jipsen - 2004 - Studia Logica 76 (2):291 - 303.
We consider various classes of algebras obtained by expanding idempotent semirings with meet, residuals and Kleene-*. An investigation of congruence properties (e-permutability, e-regularity, congruence distributivity) is followed by a section on algebraic Gentzen systems for proving inequalities in idempotent semirings, in residuated lattices, and in (residuated) Kleene lattices (with cut). Finally we define (one-sorted) residuated Kleene lattices with tests to complement two-sorted Kleene algebras with tests.

  • Algebraic aspects of cut elimination.Francesco Belardinelli, Peter Jipsen & Hiroakira Ono - 2004 - Studia Logica 77 (2):209 - 240.
We will give here a purely algebraic proof of the cut elimination theorem for various sequent systems. Our basic idea is to introduce mathematical structures, called Gentzen structures, for a given sequent system without cut, and then to show the completeness of the sequent system without cut with respect to the class of algebras for the sequent system with cut, by using the quasi-completion of these Gentzen structures. It is shown that the quasi-completion is a generalization of the MacNeille completion. (...)

  • Commutation-Augmented Pregroup Grammars and Mildly Context-Sensitive Languages.Nissim Francez & Michael Kaminski - 2007 - Studia Logica 87 (2-3):295-321.
The paper presents a generalization of pregroup, by which a freely-generated pregroup is augmented with a finite set of commuting inequations, allowing limited commutativity and cancelability. It is shown that grammars based on the commutation-augmented pregroups generate mildly context-sensitive languages. A version of Lambek’s switching lemma is established for these pregroups. Polynomial parsability and semilinearity are shown for languages generated by these grammars.

This book sets out the foundations, methodology, and practice of a formal framework for the description of language. The approach embraces the trends of lexicalism and compositional semantics in computational linguistics, and theoretical linguistics more broadly, by developing categorial grammar into a powerful and extendable logic of signs. Taking Montague Grammar as its point of departure, the book explains how integration of methods from philosophy (logical semantics), computer science (type theory), linguistics (categorial grammar) and meta-mathematics (mathematical logic ) provides a (...)
