  1. Human Knowledge: Its Scope and Limits.Bertrand Russell - 1948 - London and New York: Routledge.
How do we know what we "know"? How did we –as individuals and as a society – come to accept certain knowledge as fact? In _Human Knowledge,_ Bertrand Russell questions the reliability of our assumptions on knowledge. This brilliant and controversial work investigates the relationship between ‘individual’ and ‘scientific’ knowledge. First published in 1948, this provocative work contributed significantly to an explosive intellectual discourse that continues to this day.

  • Consciousness and Revolution in Soviet Philosophy: From the Bolsheviks to Evald Ilyenkov.David Bakhurst - 1991 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
This 1991 book is a critical study of the philosophical culture of the USSR, and the first substantial treatment of a Soviet philosopher's work by a Western author. The book identifies a tradition within Soviet Marxism that has produced significant theories of the nature of the self and human activity, of the origins of value and meaning, and of the relation of thought and language. The tradition is presented through the work of Evald Ilyenkov, the man who did most to (...)

  • Lenin, Hegel, and Western Marxism a Critical Study.Kevin Anderson (ed.) - 1995 - University of Illinois Press.
This first full-length treatment of Lenin's studies of Hegel presents Lenin as a major figure in Hegelian Marxism, providing a more nuanced portrait of his work than that of either official Marxist-Leninism or most Western accounts. "With impressive argumentation and wide-ranging scholarship, Anderson presents us with a Lenin that no one seriously interested in current debates over the relevance of Marxist theory to socialist practice can afford to miss." -- Bertell Ollman, author of Dialectical Investigations "An important contribution to grasping (...)

  • Bogdanov and Lenin: Epistemology and revolution.David G. Rowley - 1996 - Studies in East European Thought 48 (1):1 - 19.
This paper explains how A. Bogdanov changed from a left Bolshevik impatient for armed insurrection into a moderate proponent of revolution through cultural transformation by placing him in the context of a debate over epistemology among Russian Social Democrats in the early twentieth century. By relying on neo-Kantian epistemology to justify socialist revolution, N. Berdyaev actually began to turn away from Marxism. Lenin espoused a naive realism that was consistent with scientific socialism, but which did not satisfy Bogdanov. Empiriomonism, Bogdanov’s (...)
