For decades most scientists assumed that life emerged billions of years ago in a “primordial soup” somewhere on the Earth’s surface. Evidence is mounting, however, that life may have begun deep beneath the surface, perhaps near a volcanic ocean vent or even inside the hot crust itself. Since there are hints that life’s history on Earth extends back through the phase of massive cosmic bombardment, it may be that life started on Mars and came here later, perhaps inside rocks ejected (...) from the Red Planet by large impacts. The traffic of intact rocks between Mars and Earth is now an established fact, and experiments confirm that microbes could survive the rigours of the journey through space if cocooned within such material. Ideas about heredity and evolution are undergoing a revolutionary change. New findings in molecular biology challenge the gene-centered version of Darwinian theory according to which adaptation occurs only through natural selection of chance DNA variations. In Evolution in Four Dimensions, Eva Jablonka and Marion Lamb argue that there is more to heredity than genes. They trace four "dimensions" in evolution -- four inheritance systems that play a role in evolution: genetic, epigenetic, behavioral, and symbolic. These systems, they argue, can all (...) provide variations on which natural selection can act. Evolution in Four Dimensions offers a richer, more complex view of evolution than the gene-based, one-dimensional view held by many today. The new synthesis advanced by Jablonka and Lamb makes clear that induced and acquired changes also play a role in evolution.After discussing each of the four inheritance systems in detail, Jablonka and Lamb "put Humpty Dumpty together again" by showing how all of these systems interact. They consider how each may have originated and guided evolutionary history and they discuss the social and philosophical implications of the four-dimensional view of evolution. Each chapter ends with a dialogue in which the authors engage the contrarieties of the fictional "I.M.," or Ifcha Mistabra -- Aramaic for "the opposite conjecture" -- refining their arguments against I.M.'s vigorous counterarguments. De la notion de vie on pourrait dire ce que saint Augustin disait du temps : "Si personne ne me demande ce que c'est, je le sais; mais si on me le demande et que je veuille l'expliquer, je ne le sais plus." L'ouvrage s'efforce de saisir cette notion à travers les écrits des plus grands théoriciens de la vie, de l'Antiquité à l'aube de la biologie moderne. Il s'agit d'un guide de lecture et d'une gigantesque somme de textes - (...) plus de mille extraits d'ouvrages essentiels - commentés et critiqués dans une perspective historique, philosophique et scientifique. C'est aussi la tentative d'éclaircir, par l'histoire d'une notion, la philosophie sous-tendant les sciences biologiques actuelles. Hippocrate, Platon, Aristote et Galien ouvrent une réflexion systématique sur la vie. Leurs théories subsisteront jusqu'à la Renaissance, où la chimiatrie les conteste, et au XVIIe siècle où le mécanisme les remplace par une conception issue de la nouvelle physique (Von Helmont, Harvey, Descartes, Malebranche). Au siècle des Lumières, médecins et naturalistes (Boerhaave, Stahl, Bonnet, Bichat, entre autres) poursuivent la recherche en des voies diverses et parfois divergentes, mais sans parvenir à des résultats comparables à ceux qu'obtient la physique newtonienne à la même époque. Ce n'est qu'au XIXe siècle et au début du XXe que la biologie moderne trouve ses véritables pères fondateurs (Lamarck, Claude Bernard, Darwin, Mendel, Weismann, De Vries).
