  1. Primary and secondary qualities.Peter Ross - 2015 - In Mohan Matthen (ed.), The Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy of Perception. New York, NY: Oxford University Press UK. pp. 405-421.
The understanding of the primary-secondary quality distinction has shifted focus from the mechanical philosophers’ proposal of primary qualities as explanatorily fundamental to current theorists’ proposal of secondary qualities as metaphysically perceiver dependent. The chapter critically examines this shift and current arguments to uphold the primary-secondary quality distinction on the basis of the perceiver dependence of color; one focus of the discussion is the role of qualia in these arguments. It then describes and criticizes reasons for characterizing color, smell, taste, sound, (...)

  • Vision and certitude in the age of Ockham: optics, epistemology, and the foundations of semantics, 1250-1345.Katherine H. Tachau - 1988 - New York: E.J. Brill.
When William of Ockham lectured on Lombard's Sentences in 1317-1319, he articulated a new theory of knowledge. Its reception by fourteenth-century scholars was, however, largely negative, for it conflicted with technical accounts of vision and with their interprations of Duns Scotus. This study begins with Roger Bacon, a major source for later scholastics' efforts to tie a complex of semantic and optical explanations together into an account of concept formation, truth and the acquisition of certitude. After considering the challenges of (...)

  • Francisco Suárez on the Intentional Species.Jörg Alejandro Tellkamp - 2012 - Quaestio 12:3-23.
With his notion of the intentional species, Francisco Suárez reevaluates the role of causality within a realist theory of knowledge. Taking into account various traditional accounts, e.g. Avicenna’s, Aquinas’s and Durandus’s, he develops a novel approach according to which the accidental features of material objects are necessary, though not sufficient causes for knowledge. In rejecting the Aristotelian claim that cognitive processes are passive, he thinks that knowing is essentially an active reaching out to the objects known. His interpretation of causality (...)

  • The Notitia Intuitiva_ and _Notitia Abstractiva of the External Senses in Second Scholasticism: Suárez, Poinsot and Francisco de Oviedo.Daniel Heider - forthcoming - New Content is Available for Vivarium.
_ Source: _Page Count 31 This paper analyzes the theories of three representatives of Second Scholasticism, namely Francisco Suárez, SJ, John Poinsot, OP, and Francisco de Oviedo, SJ, on the issue of the intuitive and abstractive cognition of the external senses. Based on a comparison of their theories, linked to the historical starting point of the debate in the first decades of the fourteenth century, the paper argues that the doctrinal and argumentative matrix of these authors’ texts is significantly ‘present’ (...)
