She examines the fundamental notions of happiness and virtue, the role of nature in ethical justification and the relation between concern for self and concern for others. Her careful examination of the ancient debates and arguments shows that many widespread assumptions about ancient ethics are quite mistaken. Ancient ethical theories are not egoistic, and do not depend for their acceptance on metaphysical theories of a teleological kind. Most centrally, they are recognizably theories of morality, and the ancient disputes about the place of virtue in happiness can be seen as akin to modern disputes about the demands of morality. This chapter surveys the origins and development in Greek philosophy of the thought that living well requires living as a citizen of the world.

Modern accounts of Stoic politics have attributed to Zeno the ideal of an isolated community of sages and to later Stoics such as Seneca a cosmopolitan utopia transcending all traditional States. By returning to the Cynic background to both Zeno's Republic and the Cosmopolitan tradition, this paper argues that the distance between the two is not as great as is often supposed. This account, it is argued, is more plausible than trying to offer a developmental explanation of the supposed transformation (...) in Stoic political thought from isolated community to cosmopolitan utopia. The purpose of this book is to trace the main developments in Greek philosophy during the period which runs from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.c. to the end of the Roman Republic. These three centuries, known to us as the Hellenistic Age, witnessed a vast expansion of Greek civilization eastwards, following Alexander's conquests; and later, Greek civilization penetrated deeply into the western Mediterranean world assisted by the political conquerors of Greece, the Romans. But philosophy throughout this (...) time remained a predominantly Greek activity. The most influential thinkers in the Hellenistic world were Stoics, Epicureans and Sceptics. This book gives a concise critical analysis of their ideas and their methods of thought. The last book in English to cover this ground was written sixty years ago. In the interval the subject has moved on, quite rapidly since the last war, but most of the best work is highly specialized. There is a clear need for a general appraisal of Hellenistic philosophy which can provide those who are not specialists with an up-to-date account of the subject. Hellenistic philosophy is often regarded as a dull product of second-rate thinkers who are unable to stand comparison with Plato and Aristotle. Eric Osborn's book presents a major study of Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons, who attacked Gnostic theosophy with positive ideas as well as negative critiques. Irenaeus's combination of argument and imagery, logic and aesthetic, was directed to the bible. Dominated by a Socratic love of truth and a classical love of beauty, he was a founder of Western humanism. Erasmus, who edited the first printed edition of Irenaeus, praised him for his freshness and vigour. This book assembles the evidence for what the Greek Fathers, the men whose contructive thought underlies the creeds, really thought and taught about the nature of God. It shows that they were original thinkers, with a profound reverence for the text of the Scriptures, and minds keenly tranined to discuss what ultimate truths were expressed in the scriptural text and what reality should be ascribed to Christian religious experience. The results indicate that a good deal which is assumed in current (...) theological text-books needs to be revised. The Fathers had to reconcile monotheism with faith in a Trinity of divine Persons. In the process, they pursued many lines of inquiry, often only to discard them after trial, but after following various clues and making various intellectual adventures they reached a solution of the problem, which was both true to their data and philosophically reasonable. Though the bulk of the book is concerned with the third and fourth centuries, during which the creeds were in the process of formulation, the story is carried down to the eighth century where the progress of original thought came to a standstill. It is shown that a great change came over the philosophical tradition during the sixth century, and owing to the consequent growth of formalism, a genuine outbreak of tritheism occurred. The book ends with the account of how this outbreak was met and overcome, largely through the efforts of a thinker whose very name is unknown, and whose book has only survived under the name of another man. The thesis examines it in its historical context and so explores the inter-action between thought and events. It traces how what began as a radical doctrine came to be closely identified with the Roman establishment. ;The first three chapters concentrate on (...) early Stoic views about society; throughout, their ideas are compared and contrasted with those of Plato and Aristotle. After an early date for Zeno's Politeia has been rejected, this ideal society of the wise is examined in its philosophical and political context. The ideal was linked to their criticisms of the present; Zeno and Chrysippus analysed contemporary society, arguing that it was a hierarchy of slavery, incompatible with homonoia. Chapter Three considers Stoic attitudes to political participation and constitutional forms; democratic tendencies in Stoic thought are noted. ;Their political thought is consistent with their sympathy for the policy of leading Athenian democrats. Chapter Four reassesses Stoic involvement in third century Athenian politics, particularly Zeno's 'friendship' with Antigonus Gonatas. ;Chapters Five and Six examine Stoic arguments on property and justice and their relation to the ideology of the Spartan revolution. In the latter particular attention is paid to the role of Sphaerus. ;The last three chapters are concerned with the way that the Stoic political outlook changed during the second century and the impact of Roman predominance. A division emerges between those sympathetic to the ideas of their predecessors and those who wish to distance themselves from this heritage. This division is seen in the differing attitudes to the tribunate of Tiberius Gracchus. An increased acceptance of contemporary society is apparent in the development of a Stoic justification of empire. (shrink)
