Whether its ultimate resting-place is deemed to be Fukuyama’s liberal democracy or Baudrillard’s hyperreality, history, according to a number of pundits, has reached the end of the line. In the inflated debates that have ensued, it is precisely history which has been ignored, for the conception of posthistoire is far from new. Here, Lutz Niethammer, Germany’s leading practitioner of ‘history from below’, explores in fascinating detail the forms the conception has taken in the twentieth century and assembles what amounts to (...) an intellectual history of disillusion and resignation. In his survey of thinkers as diverse as Kojeve, Heidegger and Junger, he finds adherents to the idea of the end of history on the Right and Left. But whether they pinned all their hopes on the nation or the proletariat, in different ways they have all conflated the apparent collapse of a particular historical project with the collapse of history itself. From the perspective of a contemporary German reader, one consideration is particularly important from the start. Illumination of the political conduct of Martin Heidegger cannot and should not serve the purpose of a global depreciation of his thought. As a personality of recent history, Heidegger comes, like every other such personality, under the judgment of the historian. In Farias’ book as well, actions and courses of conduct are presented that suggest a detached evaluation of Heidegger’s character. But in general, as (...) members of a later generation who cannot know how we would have acted under conditions of a political dictatorship, we do well to refrain from moral judgments on actions and omissions from the Nazi era. Karl Jaspers, a friend and contemporary of Heidegger, was in a different position. In a report that the denazification committee of the University of Freiburg at the end of 1945, he passed judgment on Heidegger’s “mode of thinking”: it seemed to him “in its essence unfree, dictatorial, uncommunicative.”7 This judgment is itself no less informative about Jaspers than about Heidegger. In making evaluations of this sort Jaspers, as can be seen from his book on Friedrich Schelling, was guided by the strict maxim that whatever truth a philosophical doctrine contains must be mirrored in the mentality and lifestyle of the philosopher. This rigorous conception of the unity of work and person seems to me inadequate to the autonomy of thought and, indeed, to the general history of the reception and influence of philosophical thought. I do not mean by this to deny all internal connection between philosophical works and the biographical contexts from which they come—or to limit the responsibility attached to an author, who during his lifetime can always react to unintended consequences of his utterances. 7. These essays by eminent European intellectual and cultural historian Anson Rabinbach address the writings of key figures in twentieth-century German philosophy. Rabinbach explores their ideas in relation to the two world wars and the horrors facing Europe at that time. Analyzing the work of Benjamin and Bloch, he suggests their indebtedness to the traditions of Jewish messianism. Radikale Vernunftkritik ist der philosophische Gemeinplatz unseres Jahrhunderts, der auch hundert Jahre nach Nietzsches Verstummen immer erneut mit Originalitatsanspruch und in schockierender Absicht vorgetragen wird. HIer geht es nicht mehr um einzelne Schwachen, SelbstmiSSverstandnisse oder Kompetenzuberschreitungen der Vernunft wie in der Tradition philosophischer Aufklarung seit den Sophisten - Vernunft als ganze steht unter Anklage. DEm entspricht die Krise des "animal rationale". DAs "Vernunftwesen ist ins Gerede gekommen; mit ihm mag sich fast niemand mehr identifizieren, denn 'Vernunft' als einstiger Ehrentitel des (...) Menschen scheint heute verkehrt zu sein in das Merkzeichen seiner globalen Schuld und Verblendung. ES ist das gemeinsame Motiv der hier versammelten, ziemlich unterschiedlichen Texte, dem entgegenzutreten und die Vernunftkritik kritisch in vernunftige Schranken zu weisen, denn fur das Lebewesen 'Mensch' gibt es zur vernunftigen Vernunft keine lebbare Alternative. MOglich wird dies freilich erst durch eine Theorie der Rationalitat, die die traditionelle Philosophie der Vernunft in aktuellen Kontexten kritisch reformuliert und ihre unverzichtbaren Motive auch in praktischer Hinsicht wieder zur Geltung bringt; dazu soll dieser Band beitragen. Given the significant attachment of the philosopher to the climate and intellectual mood of National Socialism, it would be inappropriate to criticize or exonerate his political decision in isolation from the very principles of Heideggerian philosophy itself. It is not Heidegger, who, in opting for Hitler, "misunderstood himself"; instead, those who cannot understand why he acted this way have failed to understand him. A Swiss professor regretted that Heidegger consented to compromise himself with the "everyday," as if a philosophy that (...) explains Being from the standpoint of time and the everyday would not stand in relation to the daily historical realities that govern its origins and effects. The possibility of a Heideggerian political philosophy was not born as a result of a regrettable "miscue," but from the very conception of existence that simultaneously combats and absords the Zeitgeist.
