I once wrote to Imré Lakatos that if he had not already established himself as an accomplished philosopher and provocateur, he could have made a successful career as a Hollywood script writer. I had in mind, at that time, a beautifully written paper he had constructed by pasting together the cuttings from other papers. I had forgotten that his reputation as a dramatist was already established, with the production of his Proofs and Refutations [9]. For that work, it seems to (...)

Abstract The paper is an attempt to interpret Imre Lakatos's methodology of scientific research programmes (MSRP) on the basis of his mathematical methodology, the method of proofs and refutations (MPR). After sketching MSRP and MPR and analysing their relationship to Popper's and Poly a's work, I argue that MSRP was originally conceived as a methodology in the same sense as MPR. The most conspicuous difference between the two, namely that MSRP is fundamentally backward?looking, whereas MPR is primarily forward?looking, is due (...)

  • The naturalists return.Philip Kitcher - 1992 - Philosophical Review 101 (1):53-114.
This article reviews the transition between post-Fregean anti-naturalistic epistemology and contemporary naturalistic epistemologies. It traces the revival of naturalism to Quine’s critique of the "a priori", and Kuhn’s defense of historicism, and use the arguments of Quine and Kuhn to identify a position, "traditional naturalism", that combines naturalistic themes with the claim that epistemology is a normative enterprise. Pleas for more radical versions of naturalism are articulated, and briefly confronted.
