This is the most up-to-date and comprehensive interpretation of the philosophy of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Amongst its other virtues, it makes considerable use of unpublished manuscript sources. The book seeks to demonstrate the systematic unity of Leibniz's thought, in which theodicy, ethics, metaphysics and natural philosophy cohere. The key, underlying idea of the system is the conception of nature as an order designed by God to maximise the opportunities for the exercise of reason. From this idea emerges the view that (...) this world is the best of all possible worlds, and an ethical ideal in which the well-being of human beings is promoted through the gradual extension of intellectual enlightenment. A recent article in this journal describes certain mathematical and philosophical controversies which occurred in Prussia during the middle decades of the 18th century. The article pays particular attention to the position of Christian Wolff and to the views of some of his followers. Both Wolff and the Wolffians are shown to have supported some of Leibniz's doctrines against those of the Newtonian camp. As a result, or perhaps in part as a premise, there is a strong tendency throughout the (...) article to identify Wolff himself with Leibniz. The reader will naturally conclude that Wolff (and, in turn, the Wolffians) must have been a faithful student and expositor of his master, Leibniz. My purpose in the present investigation is to contribute to an examination of the accuracy of this portrayal. (shrink)

Dieser Aufsatz analysiert Leibniz' Begriff der Expression. Er ist eine Vorstudie zu einer umfassenden Untersuchung der Lehre, daß jede einfache Substanz das ganze Weltall ausdrückt. Leibnizens Beispiele und Definitionen von Expression werden besprochen, und dann wird die Analyse des Begriffs in zwei Stufen entwickelt.

In diesem Artikel bringe ich zwei Thesen vor. Zum einen behaupte ich, daβ in den ersten Jahren des 18. Jahrhunderts eine wichtige terminologische Wende in der Leibnizschen Metaphysik stattfand: Das Thema der körperlichen Substanz wurde durch den Begriff des Organismus ersetzt. Die Entdeckung dieser Wende widerspricht der weit verbreiteten Meinung, Leibniz habe -vom Briefwechsel mit Des Bosses hier abgesehen -in seinen letzten Jahren das Interesse an einer Theorie der zusammengesetzten Einheiten verloren und stattdessen seinen früheren idealistischen Glauben, daß es nur (...) einfache Substanzen gibt, bis zum Ende seines Lebens verteidigt. Zum zweiten vermute ich, daß die Realität der zusammengesetzten Entitäten, die aus der unio von Seele und Körper entsteht, durch die Lehre der prästabilierten Harmonie begründet wird -aufgrund der in meiner Dissertation verteidigten Auffassung, daβ diese Lehre von der Mikroskopie der Leibniz-Zeit inspiriert und gerechtfertigt wird, behaupte ich zudem, daβ Leibniz' spätere Ideen zum ontologischen Status der Körper ebenfalls auf sein Interesse an der Mikroskopie verweisen. Das Konzept der Naturmaschine ist durch Leibniz 1695 in seinem Système nouveau de la nature et de la communication des substances eingeführt worden. Es liefert die Realdefinition des organischen Körpers und gibt ein Unterscheidungskriterium zwischen Körpern, die organisch sind, und solchen, die es nicht sind, an: die Zerlegung ins Unendliche der Maschine in andere Maschinen, ohne dass man ein Ende erhält, das nicht selbst Maschine wäre. Diese Struktur der Verschachtelung entspricht derjenigen, die der materia secunda, wie Leibniz sie nennt, eine (...) Form verleiht. Sie kann ebenso als Aggregat betrachtet werden, das aus einer Unendlichkeit von Monaden resultiert, als auch als ein Aggregat, das bis ins Unendliche körperliche Substanzen ineinander enthält. So erlaubt die Naturmaschine die Positivität zu unterstützen, die der Begriff der körperlichen Substanz in den Augen von Leibniz stets behalten hat, auch in den letzten Entwicklungen der monadologischen Ontologie, die man nicht auf eine idealistische These reduzieren kann. One of the most curious features of Leibniz's late metaphysics is no doubt the idea of the vinculum substantiale, or substantial bond, found principally in the correspondence with Des Bosses. Apparently out of the blue, Leibniz posits some kind of thing that will help account for transubstantiation, "realize" phenomena and ground the reality of corporeal or composite substances. This dissertation is the first extended treatment of Leibniz's doctrine of the vinculum substantiale in English. It begins with an examination of Leibniz's (...) general theory of the nature of composite substance and explains the tension in Leibniz's system regarding the unity of composite substance. It then analyzes Leibniz's correspondence with Des Bosses and other related texts and situates the doctrine of the vinculum substantiale against the backdrop of these difficulties regarding the nature of composite substance. The analysis shows that the standard interpretations of the vinculum substantiale are wrong on a number of important fronts. First, the doctrine of the vinculum substantiale has, in the end, little to do with transubstantiation. Second, although it has little to do with transubstantiation in the end, its nature is determined in large part by Leibniz's account of transubstantiation. Third, the vinculum substantiale is some substance-like thing that exists apart from the monads in a composite; it is not a relation , a dominant monad , a substantial form or the entire composite substance . Fourth, the doctrine of the vinculum substantiale cannot be simply the result of Leibniz's attempts to placate his religious friend , for at one point in the correspondence, Leibniz argues against Des Bosses, who had claimed that the vinculum should be a relation or a mode of a substance, and suggests that the vinculum must indeed be a substance. Fifth, the vinculum substantiale is not found only in the correspondence with Des Bosses, but in a handful of other tests of the same period. These five points ought to be seen as a genuine contribution to the study of Leibniz's metaphysics. (shrink)
