  • Christian Existence Today: Essays on Church, World, and Living in Between.Stanley Hauerwas - 2010 - Wipf and Stock Publishers.
Stanley Hauerwas begins this volume with a vigorous response to the charge of sectarianism leveled against his work by James Gustafson, among others. "Show me where I am wrong about God, Jesus, the limits of liberalism, the nature of the virtues, or the doctrine of the church," Hauerwas replies to his critics, "but do not shortcut that task by calling me a sectarian."The essays that follow explore in a lucid, compelling, firm, and provocative way the church's nature, message, and ministry (...)

  • Democracy and Tradition.Jeffrey Stout - 2003 - Princeton University Press.
Though responses to Stout's book, "Democracy and Tradition," have touched on his discussion of rights, none has comprehensively examined his position on the subject. Having endorsed several objections Stout raises against some influential views on democracy and rights, this article proceeds to criticize Stout's description and theoretical account of the natural and human rights traditions. The central argument is that Stout cannot successfully both affirm the traditions and adhere to his account.

  • Waiting for Godot in Sarajevo: theological reflections on nihilism, tragedy, and apocalypse.David Toole - 1998 - Boulder, Colo.: Westview Press.
In the summer of 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, an event which led to the horror of World War I and which many historians suggest marked the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1992, Sarajevo again lurched into prominence as the focal point of one of the century’s bloodiest civil wars. Yet Sarajevo at one point epitomized the dreams of the Enlightenment, a city where Christians, Jews, and Muslims peacefully coexisted. In the midst of Sarajevo’s recent decline (...)

  • Happiness and the Christian Moral Life: An Introduction to Christian Ethics.Paul J. Wadell - 2007 - Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
Inspired by Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas, Happiness and the Christian Moral Life argues that the central question of ethics is the meaning and nature of happiness. In the Christian life, happiness is inseparable from goodness, particularly from a way of life that helps us grow together in the goodness of God. This book attempts to show what such a life might look like and how it might change our understanding of Christian ethics.

  • The Church as Polis: From Political Theology to Theological Politics as Exemplified by Jürgen Moltmann and Stanley Hauerwas.Arne Rasmusson - 1994
The argument of this book is that political theology suffers both from deep inherent tensions in its attempt to mediate the Christian tradition and the modern emancipatory tradition, and from inadequate understandings of the nature of modern society and its own social base. This is shown through an exposition of its most prolific and influential representative, Jurgen Moltmann.

  • The body of compassion: ethics, medicine, and the church.Joel James Shuman - 1999 - Boulder, Colo.: Westview Press.
In The Body of Compassion, Joel Shuman presents an important, new theological treatment of contemporary bioethics, weaving together personal experience, a critical treatise on contemporary bioethics, and an exploration of a Christian theological alternative. The author first draws the reader into a consideration of the current state of bioethics by relating the story of his grandfather, a hard-working family man who died a solitary death, unaccompanied by loved ones, in the unfamiliar and sterile world of a hospital. Troubled by the way (...)
